Had a previous post about my 2005 vert top not going up. Took it to the repair shop and they are ordering the part. I will let everyone know what part when they install it. Thanks for everyone's help. New question. The dealer said a new door handle touchpad would be 20$ for the pad and a 100$ install. They said even though it is only 2 screws that a computer had to program it to the car. Is this true or am I being had? I told them no.
Frankly, I wouldn't go back to them, if they are willing to rob you like this. Or if they are so ignorant that they think they aren't robbing you.
Everything I've read is that it is an under five minute job. Now, if this dealer were willing to work with you and say, charge a quarter of an hour's labor charge, then maybe. Seems like the service writer doesn't know what's involved, or is trying to make money on your lack of knowledge. I've seen that before from some dealers.
Replacing pads would have to be Velcro to be any easier, Chuck.
Just one IMPORTANT thing to keep in mind if you're going DIY.
Be VERY careful to NOT allow the wires to drop inside the door, it's an easy mistake & a real PITA fishing the suckers out w/o removing door panel.
Dealer 'Service Advisors' really don't know if they're foot or horseback when it comes to repairs, time etc. & not just your SA but 99% of 'em.

Thanks for the tip. This forum is great!!! Thanks everyone
So what is the outcome of this?
Did you clean the pad? Did you change the pad?
Who is the dealer?
I was wondering the same thing.
Only, I would have handled this differently.
There's always the very real possibility that the service writer just didn't know what he was talking about, and the dealer wasn't trying to cheat him at all.
I would have returned to the dealer armed with the facts, and asked to see the Service Manager.
I would have asked if he'd like to re-think the repair charge, because I expect to pay for about 15 minutes labor, + the part + tax, and that's it.
If the service manager insisted on an inappropriate price, I'd either buy the part and do it myself, or take the car someplace else.
The pad is two screws and an unplug to replace, although if you live in a humid place, I think it would be better to clean the contacts yourself as you can then make sure to put some corrosion protector on those contacts to keep it from happening again. And the warning above to avoid letting the wire harness fall back into the door is a good one...
