That crap is so frustrating! I took my wife's car to the Local Toyota dealer with a K&N oil filter and 4 qts of Mobil1. Of course I made sure they understood that I wanted my oil and filter used! Somehow they managed to use my K&N filter, but used their own cheap oil! I made them drain it and buy a new K&N filter and put in the proper oil! How hard is it??

At least that's not as bad as what happened to my friends son! He took his car to WalMart for an oil change. They filled the crankcase with windshield washer fluid!!! Seized his engine half a mile down the road!! Then they didn't want to fix his car!

I buy my own oil and filter and take it with me, then stand there and watch them change it.

I think as long as the oil met the specs, I would just leave it in and ask for my money back. I would not want them to touch my car again.

I do the same thing. I jack my car up and put ramps under the wheels after I get it up with my floor jack and do the oil and filter change myself. I don't trust the dealer shop people here. They tried to rip me off every time I took my old S10 Blazer in for their economy oil change. The cheap price for the regular oil change was to get you in so they could find something else wrong (so they said) and call you on the phone with the bad news about an expensive repair job. My last trip to this big Chevy dealer was it for me. My S10 Blazer had an oil cooler/tow package from the factory and I left my car their for the oil change planning to pick it up in a couple of hours. I got a call telling me the oil lines going to the transmission were leaking and needed to be replaced. I said how much are you talking about and the reply was "$500". I said $500 for two oil lines, no thank you. Just finish the oil change and i'll be by to pick up my car. I took it to a local garage and they replaced a gasket for $29 total! I don't trust the dealer's shop people at that place at all. That story is only one time they tried to take advantage of me. The only way i'd go back is if I had a major problem that was covered under warranty and there wasn't another place I could go. I don't want to mention the Dealer's name on the forum, but i'd be glad to send it to anyone in a PM.

I'd go to a Acme Quicky-Lube & School Of Beauty before I'd go to any dealer for an oil change. Dealers make their living selling cars, not fixing them. If they screw up an oil change and you catch them they can make it up on the next car they sell. If a shop that does only maintenance screws up they have no fall back position. They could be out of business if people start thinking they can't do an oil change right.

With that said, doing your own is the best solution. It is super-easy on these cars compared to others I've owned.

It is a shame, but it does happen all to often.

That is why I change my own oil and filter. In fact it is time to do it again. Oil life is at 49% and I like to change it around 50% for peace of mind.

Maybe I'm missing something here but 4 lt/quarts cost $31.00? Shouldn't that have been a 6 quart oil and filter change? I get my Mobil 1 at Costco when it's on sale and 6 quarts runs about $27.00 U.S.. If I have this wrong my apologies but 4 quarts in a six quart system is just wrong all away around.

Nowadays the consumer has to be very demanding and explicit.

Really kinda like being a ***** but otherwise anything can happen.

Find a business that respects you and your business.

When I was first dating my now wife she had an older toyota and took it in for an oil change. They messed up the drain plug really bad and it leaked like a sive. My wife is a couple miles away and the car dies. The oil change shop was not going to do anything about stating the the car was old and not worth much. I get involved and tell them they can put a new (used) engine in or see me in court. We went to court and they really should have stepped up. I only wanted them to buy the new motor for it ~$1500 and told them I would put it in myself. They got a bill after the repairs were done for over $5K.

either start doing it yourself, or if you prefer a dealer to do it, find one that let's you bring your own "parts" and just charges the labour - before I started doing it myself I used to take it to a GM dealer who charged $10 labour but eventually I got fed up of their continuous cross selling...

There's only one way to make sure it's done right and that's to DIY. I've been driving 59 years and never paid for an oil and filter change or brake job. Guess how many problems I've had in all that time? 0 Think of all the $ I've saved.
