The mirror is held on to the window by a hex nut. You have to twist the mirror unit to the left or right and it will come off same with putting it on flush the mount to the window and rotate to the left. i recall it being a PITA to put back on.

Definitely agree with PITA putting back on. I had to take it to a local shop.

Be very careful putting it back on, the mount pins in the locking fixture can be bent easily and the mirror will then be loose. If in doubt, go to your local auto glass shop. They remove them frequently.
