When we turn the A/C on, the car vibrates, and when you look at the compressor when the switch is pushed the pully wobbles pretty crazy , if we run with no AC, should the car be ok to drive till I can get the compressor replaced ???
I don't think I would run it if it is vibrating like you describe. You might lock the bad bearing up totally or the vibration itself might throw the belt. Since you can turn it off, why chance any of this.
Make sure the mounting bolts are tight. I have had AC compressors do the same thing you describe and tightening the bolts (or adding them where they had not been put back by a lazy mechanic) fixed the problem.
the clutch will not engage if the ac is not on, but if the bearing is bad it could still overheat & possibly lock up. I would slide the belt off just in case.
Not a Vette but last year my ac compressor in my truck started having problems, so I didn't run the ac, however the compressor finally seized and when that happened the truck stopped running at a light and wouldn't start and left me stranded in the street because the one belt ran around everything, so I might get it looked at before it gets worse.
Currently the A/C is causing vibration issues only when it's engaged but it's something that has been getting worse over the past few years. I'm really disappointed that I had my car in for a warranty issue and they didn't solve the issue, now it's out of warranty and it looks like I'll be paying this out of my pocket...
I wonder if I keep using the A/C if the bearing will eventually lock up on me which will cause havoc! Nobody has really identified the failure effect from what I've read
I've contacted the GM Service forum member recently and they're contacting Chevy of Irvine, CA. I had all of my service work done in Minnesota while living there which might be hassle but hopefully GM can help mitigate this lingering issue.
