Default Have you got time for a little nostalgia?

Nostalgia for some, may be going back to 1980, while others become wistful around 1954.

It doesn't matter, your very first car is always a memorable experience.

If you have a photo of your very first car, please share it with us.

Unfortunately, I have no photos of mine.

However, I pulled one off the Net, that is exactly like my first car.

It was a 1951 Plymouth Cranbrook 2dr. hard top, yellow body black top 2 tone, with a flathead 6 engine, 3 on the tree, and 65,000 miles on the clock.
It burned a quart of oil every 200 miles, and had a rod bearing knock, but it was all my dad could afford.
I loved that car.

My dad paid $50.00 for it when I graduated High School at age 17.
I had to work all kinds of odd jobs to pay for the insurance, oil, tires, etc.

The body was in excellent condition for it's age with very little rust, which was amazing for the northeast in those days.

How about yours???

Got a photo somewhere, but not digital. This one is close. A 1961 Chevrolet Biscayne. Had a 235 ci straight 6 engine, and automatic transmission.

1979 Grand Prix. This thing was a piece of junk but I loved it. Paid $600 for it. What you can't see in this photo is the wire holding the rear bumper on. Had power everything including moon roof that you had to push up to help it finish closing or it would leak. The valve covers leaked so bad when I drove it home my mom had to shut the house windows until it stopped smoking Had if for six months before I was able to afford something better.

1966 Chevy Impala 4-door sedan . . . Bought it in August of 1971, I was 17. This was only a 5-year-old car then, I purchased it through an uncle who worked at a large local Chevy dealer. An 89-year-old man decided to stop driving, and had turned it in to them for cash. My uncle let me buy it for $200. It sat in the driveway for four months while I earned enough money to insure it, and I used the time to learn how to do a proper tune-up, LOF and brake job on it. All my friends called it an "Old Man's Car" (which, of course, it was) . . . But wherever we went, we always took my car. It always started, always got us there, and always got us home. A truly great car - 283 2-barrel/ Powerglide, AM/FM radio with a rear speaker, and that's about it. Sold it a few years later with over 100K on it.

Did it have the 2 speed "Powerglide", automatic?

My dad had a 1959 six cyl. with Powerglide. What a pig!

Slowest car I have ever driven in my life. Seriously!

0 - 60 took 20 seconds.

It probably weighed about 3,800 lbs, and developed about 130 hp.

Fun thread.I bought a 67 gto when I was 18,towed it home as it didn't run.Was already 12 years old.Had me a couple real good gear head buddies and we tore the top end down and did the lifters and tuned it up..That 400 in it ran great. Had a his and her shifter in it which at first I wasn't thrilled about, then realized its racing advantage.I used to burn the tires off that thing.Loved that car.Unfortunately I threw a rod thru the block racing a mustang, worst feeling in the world.Always thought I would find a decent one to restore ,but in N.J most were rusted to pieces after 10 years.Wish I could figure out how to find and post a picture.o.k here http://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j...06429649866127 was white/w/black vynl roof.

Describe your '67 GTO in Google, then pull a photo from the "images" that's identical to yours, and post it.

That's what I had to do.

Cameras had not yet been invented when I got my first car.

I saw the other thread to which you refer.

There was well over 100 posts, but very few photos, I think about a dozen.

I'm hoping for more here. Btw, my best friend in H.S. had a TR6 and loved the thing!

Bought one for 250 bucks exactly like this in 1975.Wish I still had but it was just a car back then, and one I didn't like because it was an ugly green and the brakes would fail every other time I drove it.

I don't have a picture right now, but I will look for one, but it was a 1958 Chevy DelRay, 283 3speed column shifter converted to the floor.

1961 white 2-door Corvair (no actual pik, below is from the web) bought in 1966 at age 16. It didn't run right, paid $75 for it.

My (older) brother-in-law thought it sounded like a valve problem, so I took the heads off and had the valves ground. When I was putting it back together we discovered it had a bent push rod. That was the likely culprit.

It ran good after that although it leaked oil like crazy from the the rear (actually the front) main seal. It would leave a puddle of oil a foot or more across on a hot day after sitting an hour or so. I bought "remanufactured" oil by the gallon at Noah's Ark and kept it in the back seat.

I was pissed at it one day so I took it out back in the field and beat the crap out of it, and ended up snapping the tranny input shaft. My first experience at pulling an engine and I had to drop the engine/transaxle on a piece of plywood with rollers under it, lift the body up and slide the engine out, more or less backwards from a normal car.

As I recall, the new shaft cost $10. Of course I replaced the seal also and it was fine after that. I sold it a year later for a '63 Olds Cutlass, had a tiny aluminum V-8 with a four-barrel. A huge step up from that lame-*** Corvair!
