A few weeks ago I posted about my passenger-side sun visor mirror hinge breaking, and now my drivers-side hinge has broken. I don't even use them! (2010 GS with only 23K miles). At this point, there is no way I will replace with OEM as it's an expensive DEFECTIVE product. Nor do I want to repair it as some have suggested (I'm not handy)
For those of you who have reupholstered: so you forego the mirror, but what about the electrical, i.e., Homelink? I'm not clear.
Does anyone offer a decent aftermarket alternative?
dude, screw DSV. $700 you should get a lawnmower with that deal. I went to my local upholstery guy. he did an awesome job for about 250 for both visors. i completely removed the mirror on the drivers side after it broke but left the one on the passenger side. im waiting for that crap plastic hinge to break at any moment. anyway the electrical can either be saved or removed. i didnt have home link because its only something else that will break in my overpriced poor quality plastic GM automotive but any competent upholsterer can work with that.. pm me if you have any other questions.
I keep reading about this problem, just what breaks? The hinges on my 08 seem sturdy enough.
I noticed a little rattle with mine and applied some lubricate. Maybe they get dry and break due to being forced? I really do not know but I mine seem fine.

They will probably break today..right!
Having bought my C6 recently, I test drove many C5s and C6s with broken visor mirrrors. It seemed like about one out of every five or six but it was something I wound up looking for and I was not a member of the forum then. Some seemed to have broken plastic, others I could not tell.

Preventative lubrication is pointless (been there, done that). Hinges will break on their own, even if you never open the lid to look at yourself in the mirror.
My guess is that the visors can't handle the stress of banging against the targa trim. If you use a sun shade in the summer, those visors are being moved up & down frequently. I'd move them ever-so-gently. Also, it might be helpful to use a stick-on shock absorbing pad on the targa trim which is thicker than that thin one the factory installed in my 2010.
Not real easy to see in the stock photo, but there is a dime sized "bumper" GM glued on the targa release handle. It's too thin to be effective. I'd put something more substantial and shock absorbing in that location.
