I have an unusual situation developing that has just started. On the first door opening attempt of the day the doors won't open without me using the unlock feature on the FOB. After that the door pads seem to work OK, although I think the left side door pad is a bit slow to activate. Anybody encounter this? If so, what is going on?

This happens to me also. I would be very interested in the answer. Also the air bag light goes on intermittingly. 2012 GS 3lt. Thanks Bill
Start with new batteries in the Fob so you know that weak batteries at not the problem at hand.
Next on the list, do pull the contact pads on the doors and clean them. If the release hatch button next to the key slot above the license plate is not working, then pull and clean it as well (the three buttons/pads on the car that get pressed to get you in the car).
It could be that the unlocking part of the system with the car seeing the Fob is fine, but the door pad contact is dirty and not sending a signal to open the door. (read walk up to the back of the car with the Fob in your pocket, and not the same one with a cell phone in it, and try the release button on the hatch next to the key slot to see if the hatch will open/ if the car is seeing the Fob to begin with).
I also experience this maybe once a week or so, but I usually attribute it to me not hitting the rubber part with enough fingers or in the right spot.
If you clean the contacts on the door pad, it will not matter what part of the pad you press, since with clean contacts, lightly pressing anywhere on it will open the doors.
The door latch pads as well as the entire door electrical unit have been a mystery to me ever since I bought my '05. Sometimes they work fine, other times not. There are very few things I don't like about my car and the door latches are on the short list. If I could describe them in one word, I would say "Temperamental". There has got to be a better design than that.
Go and buy new door pads. They are cheap and will last longer than the do it yourself cleaning. Trust me, I know.
It is possible the door latch is showing its age. It may need replacement. Not a hard job but better left to somebody who knows the cars, not necessarily the dealer.

Someone must have stock in GM.
The door pads and hatch switch are easy to clean, and don't get me started on the starter button and interior door buttons that love to peel if you look at them too hard (too easy to just strip the old peeling paint off the buttons, and stealth mode them with a can of Rubber spray).
