Can anyone give me an idea how much of a challenge (hemorrhoid) it would be to remove the rear portion of the center console unit (the portion inclusive of the storage area)?

Partially helpful (and in any case interesting), but what I want to remove is the rear portion - the frame that holds the center storage and lid.
You have to remove the radio surround first. After that the console base is a breeze. Radio surround is a little of a chalange, power outlet is the hardest. I broke mine to speed things up but not very much $$ to replace.
Come to think about it you might be able to just loosen the surround and pull the base out from under it.
