Automatic Shift Boot Removal

Automatic Shift Boot Removal
I have a 2006 automatic and I recently ordered a new radio bezel to replace the factory one I have. I saw the radio bezel removal guide posted here on this site but I have a couple of questions.
First is it necessary to remove the shift **** and the boot to remove the radio bezel or can you simply just disconnect the boot from the bezel?
Second, how exactly do you disconnect the automatic shift boot from the radio bezel?
Thanks

I swapped out the boot on my '10 GS for a real leather one. The boot is not actually connected to the bezel that's around the radio and HVAC controls, it just looks like it. I don't think you have to remove the shift **** because the hole that the boot sticks up through is big enough - it's been 2-3 years since I swapped mine out and I can't remember... Removing the bezel isn't very difficult at all - you have to get a little rougher with it than I wanted to but it popped off.
Good luck!

The bezel comes off without having to remove the shift **** or boot.
Just replaced the A6 shifter in my '06 and the only PITA was the TC switch connector.

Ditto that here jockey. Getting that little motha disconnected was about 60% of the job time. Heck....I broke off the little clip lock thingy so the next time it won't be so darn hard.

On most of them....the tab you have to mash to release the clip is on top of the darn thing. Hard to explain, but you'll see what we mean when you look at it. There is a tab that must be mashed down while removing the clip and the darn tab is very hard to get to. I took one of those tooth cleaning tools that are bent at the end with a rubber tip. Took the rubber tip off and the metal part underneath actually worked.....so don't laugh....LOL.

I have not found a good replacement shifter for my '05 auto shifter - where did you locate yours? Also, how did you remove the **** itself?

The '05 A4 shifter and **** are different than the A6 setup.
I used a new OEM shifter. The A6 **** removal is a bit of a PITA too but there are several tutorials posted.
Not sure about your A4 but check the Red Lion site (forum guru Talon90) for some helpful info.
