Default Recommendation for high mileage vettes(270K miles on mine) or P0121 code fix

2008 C6 coupe/base

I had been getting code P0121 (throttle position sensor) for a long time and finally I noticed the car was not driving as good - going into active traction handling when pulling out of the driveway and decreased acceleration off lights.

I got a quote to replace the throttle body (since you can't just replace the sensor) for $1000 but to clean the throttle body just $100. I decided to have it cleaned and the car runs like new. It has a throaty noise to it I haven't heard in a long time also. Well worth $100 and no engine light yet and been driving for two weeks. It use to go on a few days a week at least.

How often have you had the throttle body cleaned, if ever? The dealer was trying to sell me this service when my car was only at 15K miles. I thought they were crazy and declined.

Just the one time at 270K miles. I would say it's more for high mileage vehicles.

I think new throttle body units are around $130. Easy replacement. Glad to hear it was something simple.

They sprayed a $10 can of throttle body cleaner and charged $100.

Still if it helps.........

I need to take mine off and clean it. I have tried to keep it clean while on the car but can't do a great job.

270k? That's crazy. Any other issues other than the throttle body?

OP: I remember your car from previous CF postings. First you had to replace a turn signal switch before 250K miles, then O2 sensors at 265K, now the throttle position sensor at 270K. What a lemon! As they would say in the C7 forum, this is totally unacceptable and you should demand a new car.

270,000!!!! Awesome! My 2008 is about to turn 90,000 (probably next week). Any advice, maintenance tricks, or other ideas? I don't ever want to have to sell mine!

My husband had cleaned it the best he could without taking it off. For him it was worth me paying $100 for someone else to take it off to clean it and make sure the car ran good after it was put back on.

I had to replace the turn signal thing (about 100K miles ago), one oxygen sensor (just recently), and my ashtray hasn't opened in a few years but I don't use it anyway. Also it was one of the Hertz rental cars. These cars are built to last and well worth the money.

I think I'll keep it anyway.

I get the oil changed w/ Mobile one (I bring my own oil in) at a place I trust. I try to wash it every weekend. I get the brakes done when they need it and new tires. I can't say that I take it easy with the driving except those two weeks before I got the throttle body cleaned and it was running just a bit off. Maybe driving it a lot keeps it going.

270,000 miles

GM should contact you if not already! Honda and Toyota recognize "high-mileage" and "longevity" for their vehicles driven by owners.

I had it done to my C5. But they charged me more.

Original Harmonic Balancer? That seems to be the part people complain about the most here on the forum.

I think I recall when you first came on CF and asked about a Hertz rental car. Just curious: how many miles did it have when you got it? You are most certainly correct about that car being built to last---you're the proof of it! Congrats.

Wow! That's awesome that it still runs strong. The question is, where the hell have you been going to put on that many miles!!
