Default Third Key FOB????

I want to install a remote start in my 2008 Z06 automatic. The shop i contacted told me that they need to use one of the key fobs as part of the install, which would leave me with only one key fob for use.

Question: Can you add (program) a third key fob to the Vette?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, you can have up to 4 key fobs. If you already have 2 key fobs, presumably they're programmed for the car as fob #1 and fob #2. There is a short procedure posted here on the forum and in your owner's manual on how to do that.

However fobs programmed as #3 and #4 will not have any memory options. I don't know if what the shop is talking about would require the memory options or not.

Short answer - yes you can have up to 4 fobs as others have stated. BUT ...Beware. Basically what happens in many cases like this is that they just tape your fob up under the dash someplace so that the car ALWAYS sees a fob in the car, not only eliminating one of the best theft preventions, but also opening the possibility of having battery issues with your car.

I've heard of some shops wiring up the fob so it only powers on during the start sequence to prevent this, but either way its pretty much a hack. As sensitive as the C6 eLectronics are, i would think long and hard before doing this mod.

Cheers,
Kent

I'm more interested in the automatic Z06...

But yes, to answer the question, you can have up to four fobs attached to the car. Ebay would be a good place to get a used fob to open up and let them hack. You can get an '05-'07 fob or an '08 up fob...either will work fine.

Default Thanks Everyone...

I especially appreciate the advice on the potential pitfalls in the remote start installation.

I will do some more research on remoate start products and see if there is one that avoids using the FOB

I don't believe that can be done...the fob system is deeply integrated into the computer system that runs the entire car. It cannot be bypassed unless you are de-computering the entire car. (Is that a word?)

No. It's UN-computering.

True, especially when the car has far more computing power than a Space Shuttle did a few years ago...

It's easer than converting your Z06 to automatic.

Default What to Buy?

So for the third or fourth FOB does it matter what the label is on the extra fob you buy? They are usually labeled Fob 1 or Fob 2.

Not usually...always. No..it doesn't matter. The fobs are numbered according to the order in which they are placed in the glovebox slot when programming. All fobs are the same electrically. The number on the fob case is just for your info. If they are programmed differently, a piece of tape can just be put over whatever the fob case says.

Maybe, it's the orange convertible Z06 automatic that was for sale on Craigslist back in July?

Thanks. Seems obvious when you explain it but I have learned to take nothing for granted, especially with my mythical Z06 automatic.
