Are you holding the Stop/Acc/Run mode side? A simple quick push is all you should need. If you are not holding it then I'm guessing you are getting a "double click" on the button because the button is corroded or dirty.

When FMA refers to the "side" of the switch, he really means "Top side" or "Bottom side".
The switch looks like it has a left and right panel, but it's just a rocker switch with some fancy markings and lights.

As mentioned, holding it in the "Off" position a moment too long, will cause it to go into "Acc".

EDIT:
Our 2006 required only a quick tap on the switch to shut down, our current 2009 requires I hold the switch for just a bit longer.

If the switch is the problem, a new one is fairly cheap and changing it out is a easy DIY.

I agree with the above and would bet that you are holding the bottom of the button a bit too long. Also I agree that the button is a simple rocker switch with only a top and bottom...there is no side to side switch. It is a simple ON-OFF-ON momentary switch.
There should be no reason to have to restart the car in order to get it out of ACC mode, a simple second push on the bottom of the button should turn ACC off.
