Long story short---looking to possibly trade-in my C6 for a C7, and the reputable dealer in a neigboring state is telling me that in order to get the disount off MSRP they are offering, I have to join a credit union? Why can't they just offer the dealer invoice plus or minus whatever? It is a sizeable discount---does this sound legit? Thank you.

Just join the credit union, it doesn't cost a penny.
Sounds a little shady although every state has different rules and regulations as far as lending is concerned. Only time I've ever seen a discount in purchase price is when I financed through GMAC.
Same here in South Florida. Theres some $1000 off I think it was going on if you are a member of a credit union. It was worth joining just for that since its free. It's legit.
I am a member of like 5 different credit unions from different car purchases over the years. I will simply go with whoever provides the best APR/terms, and it's never the same place twice..
I say read the terms, but ultimately, if it's the deal you want.. just go for it. It's so easy to configure automatic payments to just about every bank in the world, I just really don't care who is receiving my money, but rather, that I got the best deal possible.
We joined SEFCU credit union last year, they only require $1 to open an account. Then I bought a used 08' Caddy CTS4 and financed with them at 60 months @ 2.4%. Credit Unions rock!!

I went to buy mine (had a rate from my own CU) from a dealership and they had me join Alaskan Credit Union (and my rate went from 2.9 to 1.9)... they are (obviously) compensated by their associations with certai financial institutions, no big deal....go for it
I think our local dealer had a special deal for some CU members. But having bought 10 or so cars from them it was a moot point. He went into the hold back to make the deal anyway.
I talked to a guy last Friday and he is about to buy a new 2015 Corvette, and he told me that if you belong to a credit union, you can get $4K off MSRP at participating dealers.

I would join in a heartbeat. I am a member of 2 CU for the same reason.
The last time we bought a new Chevrolet product we only had to prove that we were members of a credit union, but there was not a requirement to finance through them. There are so many hidden discount deals with car manufacturers - discounts they arrange with associations, large employers, etc. Sometimes, but not very often, they are stackable discounts. Ask to see the list - you might qualify for something even better. USAA has a car buying service also and we worked our best deal on a used Vette and then got a discount on top of that with USAA because it happened to be a participating dealer.
