I've got a 2008 C6 that was chirping and thought is was a pulley or the harmonic ballancer. I read the all the posts with chirping. I thought it was the alternator pulley so had it replaced. Good for a few weeks then chirping was back. I decided to replace the serpentine belt myself and bought a Goodyear Gatorback on Amazon. Took off the old and installed the new in less than 30min. No chirp. Looking at the old belt I found several small flecks of metal or dirt in the tracks. It's a known issue with these belts that are exposed to the elements day after day. Probably should be changed more often. Anyway, it was a quick, easy and economical fix. Hope this helps someone.
When my 05 started chirping after 19,000 miles, the dealers first effort was to replace belts. That worked for about 75 miles before the belt started chirping again. Report back after you put some miles on the car. I think you will be disappointed.

Mine was one of the first to have this problem on a C6. So the dealer did the following:
1. Replaced belts
2. Replaced idler pulleys
3. Replaced power steering unit
4. Finally replaced the balancer and that fixed the problem
Total time in shop: 6 weeks
I've read this same type of thing so many times and I can't understand why the dealer can't see the balancer wobbling and realize that's the problem before they replace everything else first. When I had mine done I went in there knowing it was bad and told them to replace it before they had a chance to start throw unnecessary parts at it. The SA looked at it before even writing me up and said yep, its bad alright.

My local Chevy dealer said my balancer was fine. Even though the belts were squeeling and the idler pulley was shaking so bad it looked like the belt would fly off at any time. SA said they all wobble like that. I took it to a Corvette specialist who measured the amount of wobble and showed me that it was way out of tolerance and needed to be replaced. I installed an ATI.

I agree. Most service departments consider the C6 harmonic balancer to be one of their favorite cash cows. The slightest vibration or noise, and they go for it like a Labrador to a squirrel. And they're usually right.

what type device did he use to measure the wobble ? a ruler and if so did he give you the tolerances to look for?

They used a dial gauge. The acceptable tolerances were taken from a GM TSB. I don't remember what the acceptable tolerances were but mine was close to double what was ok with GM. Even at that, the Chevy dealer in Murrieta CA said my balancer was ok. I am glad now because if they did their job properly, I would have another poorly designed GM balancer in my car instead of the ATI that was installed by Corvette Mike.
