Default Sun Visor

The cover on my mirror snapped off of my driver side sun visor and naturally in order to fix it I will have to purchase a whole new visor.

I went by my local Chevrolet dealer and they quoted the following:

-Sun visor with garage button is $249
- Sun visor without garage button is $199

The labor to install this would be $99 in addition to the parts price. They did say I can bring it in (if I bought it somewhere else) and they would still install it for the same price.

Questions I have:

1) Do these prices seem reasonable or should I research somewhere online to get these visors at a lesser price?

2) My current sun visor does have the garage button/mirror light...do I need to get this one or can I get the one without the garage button (I never use it)?

3) How easy of a fix is this- is this something I can replace myself or would it be best to have someone replace it for me? I know there will be some electrical connections (light, etc.)

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

It takes less than 5 minutes to replace the visor, do a Google search and I'm sure you will find a video or instructions.

If the car came with the homelink I would replace with another homelink visor for resale later. I use all 3 buttons on mine and it was well worth the few minutes to program the buttons to get rid of the had held controllers.

I found one on e-bay for $177.50. It had the Homelink transmitter instead of the Lear. Later year C6s had the Lear. Mine is an '08 so the Homelink suited me.

In the future, you might try a few drops of housedhold oil (3-in-1 is what I use) to lubricate the hinges abut once a year. I found that it stops the binding and squeaking and makes for smooth hinge function. Lack of lubrication is why they break.

Check with Gene Culley at Cultrag Performance for price on the replacement sun visor. Gene previously did business on the Forum as GM Parts House & always had very good prices plus an A+ reputation. He can probably also answer your question about eliminating the garage door function.

I see those from time to time on e-Bay for around $125.00 with homelink.

If considering a used one, remember that eventually they all break, a used one is that much closer to failure.

If the price (including installation) is cheap enough, I'd go for it. But since you don't know the history, price would need to be pretty low for me to bite.

Bummer.

Oil didn't work on my visors. I ended up using a silicone spray to penetrate the tiny space between the plastic hinges. So far, at 72K on my 06 vert, they haven't broken. Very cheap choice for GM on their flagship sports car....

I agree I replaced both my visors. There used to be someone on ebay that sold only the cover for $60.00, but hit and miss for installation without breaking the mirror assembly clips.
I know that my Pontiac G6 has a much better design. I've often wondered if that mirror assembly could be fitted into a vette sunvisor. I do have a spare visor with a busted cover that I might try to do just that. Probably easy to pick up a used (any GM vehicle) visor from a junk yard.

I looked at many c6s before picking up my 08 in May. It was surprising how many had one or both of the visors broken at those hinges. I had a couple of mirror covers fall in my lap during test drives when I lowered the visor.

Both of my visor mirror covers broke (and I had rarely used them). I refuse to spend hundreds to replace the visors with the same defective product.

For the time being, I'm using 1" black velcro straps to hold them together. I'm waiting patiently for an aftermarket supplier to produce something of quality.

Many cars, such as the Camaro, have the "slider" mirror cover design, which is significantly more reliable.

And made by the same frikkin company! What the hell's wrong with GM? Did they have a lot of leftovers from their old Chevettes or Vegas?

I used a little white lithium grease on the hinges on my visor mirrors years ago and they still open easy and smoothly with no binding yet today.

Oiling the hinges (as I did religiously before both covers broke off) isn't necessarily helpful.

My theory is that the continued stress of the closed covers hitting the targa latches is the culprit, i.e., when we quickly flip the visor up when no longer needed for shade, or just the stress of daily driving.

My 2010 targa latch has flimsy factory installed nickel-sized bumpers for cushioning purpose (see my grainy photo). However, they are too thin...go check for yourself. I'd go to the hardware store and get something more substantial to stick on the latches.

I'm having a lot of problems finding replacement sun visors for my '84 Corvette. Everything is either back ordered or discontinued. Has anyone ever had their's recovered? We have a great interior shop here local but I don't know if these old ones could be recovered.

My hinges broke and after trying everything from glue to wire,I was not satisfied,it looked like junk!
I bought a new visor with the Homelink on it from ebay for $175 and had the original airbag warning labels that I need too that the previous owner ripped off!
Took about 30 minutes to take off the old and replace.

Seriously, it seems that each mirror cover will live for a certain number of open-close cycles, then the hinges will break. You may be able to extend that life with oil or grease or just being gentle, but sooner or later (usually sooner), they fail.
