Default 427

I'm looking at a 60th Anniversary coupe for sale. The 427 is same LS7 engine in the Z06, right? I haven't heard of the same valve issues as I have with the Z06. What gives?

I haven't looked at the car yet. I thought all 60th cars were 427s. I guess only verts from what you say and not just 60th Anniversary cars. Good to know. Thanks

just so you know the 60th anniversary package was available on all 2013 Corvettes, so the only 2 cars that have the 427(LS7) in them are the 2013 427 Convertible and the Z06, both of these cars were also available in the regular colors has well and not only the 60th ann. White package.
Quite a few 60th cars out ere with the LS3 engines , coupes, vents and grand sports.

ZR1 ones that have the LS9 were also available in the 60th trim.

the 427 is convertible only, the Z06 a coupe only. it is a beast, get it and drive the H... Out of it. Yes the LS7 has issues with valves. It would be in your best interest to have the heads done, plus it will gain a few ponies.

The 427 was not available in the coupe unless only the convertible or of course the Z06. So if this is advertised as a 427 coupe 60th anniversary edition, it is not real.

The 2013 427's; available in convertible trim only also have had the dubious distinction of being plagued by a crank or crank bearing issue that if it will happen, occurs at about 3,000 miles. Do a search and you will catch a few Threads about this issue. Some have speculated that it is the result of a change in rod bearing materials. Any LS7/427 is suspect in regard to the exhaust valve/head maching issue...again countless Threads and posts in regard to this.

No problems with the newer 427's, GM fixed the head issue in late 2011. (that's what I heard) No issues with mine, just lots of POWER AND SPEED!!!

Two-Fast is correct......my 60th Anniversary dropped the engine after 3600 miles... Replaced it and now no problems.... It is an honor (and thrill) to own one...

Perhaps this will help explain.

Mine is a 2013 with 60th year logos in a number of areas.

However, this is not a 60th Anniversary Edition with the 427 block.

It is a standard LS3 436 hp 6.2 Liter engine. The car has simply been designated to show it is the 60th year of Corvette production.

You may want to check the Z06 section, pretty sure some newer than 2011's have had the same head issues as the earlier ones.

First my disclaimer---I owned a ZO6 and LOVED it; never had a problem or personally knew anyone that had a problem with their ZO6; I own a 427, and LOVE it. Accordingly, I took a deep interest in the ZO6 engine problem threads over many years.

Another disclaimer---I know nothing about motors, engines, etc.

What I noticed from all the ZO6 engine threads-------it seemed the vast majority---if not just about 99.999%----of those that had problems either (1) tracked and or (2) modded their cars. In other words, they beat the s#@* out of the cars and had a 'backyard type mechanic' doing the repairs and mods versus a reputable place like Callaway, etc. Whenever someone on the thread asked for those that had blown engines and HAD NOT tracked or modded their car to step up, rarely, if ever, was there a response. Even when one or two folks said they knew of 4 or 5 of their friends that had the problem and they never raced or modded their cars---when they were asked to have these friends share their experiences with us on the Forum, there was never a reply.

I don't think we will ever know what really happened with those problems.

But, I do find it very eery that the new C7 with the ZR1 package is having problems that sound very similar---metal shavings in the oil---these C7's also have that sump oil system. Sounds like GM came out with a bulletin on this and now wants the 1st oil change at 500 miles (to look for shavings?), and the oil can't be over filled or something. I don't know, but I just can't help bur wonder if there is a connection with this oil set up and the the C7 ZR1 package, the ZO6 and the 427. Maybe the tracking and modding in conjunction with the oil sump? Coincidence----Jehtro Gibbs doesn't believe in coincidences (have to watch NCIS to get that).

Yellow 427 very well stated I agree 100%, I do know one guy personally that is local that had problems with his 427 Vert LS7 engine and I believe even he said on the forum here it was just his bad luck and, this guy was not tracking or racing his car, but seemed to always have below average oil pressure, so something was probably wrong when he bought it new and I have talked to this guy at several of the local shows along with numerous other 427 and Z06 owners and they all have more mileage on their cars then and I do, and have not had any issues.
Not sure we will ever know the truth behind many of the reported engine problems, but even NASCAR blows up engines and I have to believe they have some pretty good mechanics!

According to 90% of the C6 forum, all LS2 & LS7's are POS's. All our vettes that are not an 08-13 LS3 are more prone to repair. At least that's what it seems like around here. The LS7 is the mother of all Vette engines, I would love one. Most of them are problem free, as with any engine there are some with problems. If it bothers you so much, get the valves/heads looked at. If you can afford the 427, you can afford the check-up. If you cant afford the check-up, you shouldn't be buying a 427

How could anyone disagree with the person that has one of the funniest avatars on the Forum----I laugh every time I see you post! You definitely seem like a person I would enjoy having a beer or three with......I figure my car will be worth seven figures in a few years because per all the doomsday folks on the Forum---most seem to have moved to the C7 forum now-----only 2 or 3 ZO6's and 427's will survive........

I agree with all of this. There have been a couple of posts lately that say all LS engines are prone to dropping valves…This was news to me but I didn’t see the sense in arguing. Trusting anecdotal evidence on an enthusiast internet forum just leads to further speculation and worry.

Several months ago I read an article that looked at the valve set up on the 427 and their tests on various heads showed that the stock set up had the most stable geometry, whatever that means...In the last issue of Corvette Magazine the tech writer said he’d have an in-depth article on the 427 in an upcoming issue. This might be our best chance at figuring out if there is a problem or not.

Some guys have put twin turbos on the 427 and they don’t have problems. They still put the 427 in Camaros, don’t they? If it was an inherent problem you’d think they’d all be exploding in a rain of hot metal. Even though I have an LS3, my ultimate Vette is still the 2011 carbon fiber ZO6 .

Keep in mind that it's called a 427 but is a punched out small block and not the big block of legend.

That doesn't mean it is a poor performer - anything but. It's a screamer, but it's not big block.

None of this is surprising to me. I learned at a young age that when you alter (or abuse) a factory-stock car, something will probably break that otherwise wouldn't. And there are a lot of people doing the work who probably shouldn't be, which adds to the problem.

As I've noted before on this forum, it is very difficult to modify a car and not sacrifice reliability. That is the reason I insisted on nothing but a bone-stock, untouched, virgin C6. (I have a different view on women )
