I'm thinking not big but this is the place to ask; as I was installing an Optima Yellow Top I noticed there was nothing covering the negative terminal and yes, the red piece was covering the positive. Need I be at all concerned?
No need for concern... Just always be sure not to confuse the terminals. It is normal to have a cover over the positive and I've never had a car with a cover over the negative terminal.

Actually, our 2006 had a cover over the negative terminal but our 2009 does not.
Since the negative is connected to ground on the car frame, "shorting" from the negative terminal to the frame shouldn't do anything.
Shorting across both terminals, or positive to ground, is a whole 'nuther (bad) story.

Del City sells what they call straight terminal insulators. Come in 3 sizes and both red and black. Not sure which size is correct but all 3 are less than the cost of shipping.
