I want to pick power off of my rear view mirror to power a radar detector. I can't see a way to get the plug out of the rear of the mirror - literally. I'm working mostly by feel but can't seem to feel a tab or anything I need to press to release the plug.
I'm assuming it's retained by some catch like a telephone or ethernet cable end, but am not sure. I don't want to just give it a great yank by the cord in case it is retained by a tab.
How does one release this plug so I can tap some power from it? I can't get myself behind the mirror so I"m working mostly by feel.
There is a release. Can't remember exactly how it is set up. I will look for my directions and see if it gives a hint where the release is. Once I knew where to push, it came out easy.
feel around the square plug. the release is either on the sides or top and/or bottom.
you can also turn the mirror where you can see the plug. or you can look from the outside of the windshield.
edit: if I remember correctly...the release is at the top.

What is the release? I can't feel it and I am finding the mirror resisting being turned all the way around. I'm a bit clumsy and have grown leery of adding too much force to things. They tend to snap, pop and crackle to destruction when I do.
So what am I looking for / feeling for? I did try feeling all around. I have big hands and wide fingers. I could feel nothing.

its been a while since I felt it. i'll be home to my car in ~20 min so i'll check this thread to see if you got it.
the release is on the top of the plug. The ground is the black wire on the top near the release and the 12v. Is the pink wire on the bottom row. Sometimes it helps if you push in on the connector while you press the release and then pull out.
Yeah, I found it by trying to turn the mirror more and the whole mirror came off!
So after the mirror came off its mount, I easily saw the tab and got the plug out. No way on this Earth could i have done it with the mirror mounted.
Anyway, now my mirror is off the windshield and I can't get it back on. So a small problem is now major. There is a five sided piece of metal attached to the windshield and a three sided recess in the mirror with what looks like three springs to grip something on that metal piece.
Has anybody R&R'd the mirror and can tell me how to remount it? I sure hope I haven't AGAIN broken something by using too much force.
Never pull on the mirror, you need to hold it with one hand while pulling/wiggling the plug out with the other. But I see it's too late. Here is a pic of where the wires go for the radar detector...
it should go on just like it came off. Hold the mount to one side and twist it back onto the glass.
I've been trying this and no joy. I don't get cars at all. I work successfully on boats and bike but cars...
Like I don't even see how to wire the lead I got from Corvettemods into the plug. Do I pull the pink and black wires and twist the lead and then reinsert the twisted pairs into the plug? How can that work. Or what -strip the pink and black and then wrap the wires from the lead? I don't see this at all.
I'm disgusted at my lack of ability to do anything other than bend or break pieces.

Thanks.
This will prove useful if I can get the mirror back on.
My mechanical abilities are once again on display.
Good link. I've been trying that but can't remember where it was when it came off. It should be easy, but it is me. Thx.
This drama is exactly why you should wire it directly to the fuse panel with a add-a-circuit in the passenger foot well. The mirror plug is not designed to have pins Jammed into it.

OK. The mirror is back after a rather dramatic struggle. I put the wires in the back of the plug as directed (pink/black) and of course the radar detector doesn't sense any current. So either the patch cord isn't making contact (unlikely) or I need to use the other pink and black wires different from the photo illustrated.
As to your post, I haven't a CLUE how to do an 'add in circuit') or where the detector would go if I had one. I'm not thrilled with the mirror mount because the detector causes a major deviation in my compass now.
I don't need a compass but if I have one, I can't stand it being off more than 90 degrees.
I'm at the point of selling the *#&*#&* detector and just driving slowly.
not sure if you know but the car has to be started for the detector to work when using the mirror connection.
Yes, I take it the pink is ignition or in other words, a switched line. I had the car idling when I tried. The instructions said if the connection doesn't work, change the leads to the opposite wires. I guess I lost a 50% bet here.
Either my plug is unusual or you guys are gorillas. Even with the mirror off, I had a major struggle to remove the plug an it went back in with only a GREAT deal of difficulty.
