I've been through the comprehensive programming instructions. They are a great help but I still have a problem.
I bought a used fob on line. It appears to be in good shape; no water damage or signs of abuse. I put in a new battery from Radio Shack. Naturally, no key. I've ordered a blank from Lamb Chevrolet here in Prescott.
After following the preliminary instructions, the DIC tells me it's ready and I insert the the "new" one; it becomes #3 and the Insert #4 messages comes up on the DIC. I punched off the Accessory switch and removed the fob.
I take #1 fob inside and try to use the new #3. Doesn't work.
As a test, I reinsert the newly-programmed fob and the DIC tells me its a known fob.
I go through the whole process several times with a few permutations, including erasing my #1 fob when I put it in the slot. Using my #2 fob, I successfully reprogram #1. I can attest that the slot works.
However, despite the fact that the slot calls my #3 a known fob, thus signifying (I guess) that it is at least semi-functional, it is nonfunctional for critical operatiosn.
What operations do fob #3 work for, what operations do it not work for?
Remember that fobs programmed as #3 and #4 will not work for the memory options:
Radio settings
Outside rear view mirror settings
Seat settings
Climate control settings
About the only things they'll work for is locking/unlocking the car, starting the engine, popping open the rear hatch, looking for the car with the horn.

Thanks for the reminder on the noncritical functios; I'd forgotten that.
But, it won't unlock or start the car. To all appearances, it's dead except that the slot reads it. Can a dealer test it for output?

Your symptoms are those of a FOB with a dead battery. Try another battery. Some are dead off the shelf. Check the fingers and make sure they are making good contact. Batteries (Rayovac?) that have a rough surface have been know to not make good contact.
I was having door unlocking and "no fob detected" DIC problems. Doors wouldn't open/unlock. I had the Rayovac battery in the fob. Changed battery brand, one with a smooth surface, and that fixed all my problems. Start with getting other battery brand with a smooth surface.
……and handle the battery only from the edges, not the contact surfaces. Oils from your hands can cause corrosion, and may affect both complete contact and battery life.

You'd have to have some seriously abnormal body chemestry for this to happen. If it were true the phone I'm typing this on would be corroded beyond use.
