Has anyone tried replacing the spark plug heat shields?
I am thinking of using the fireproof sleeves, but not sure if the sleeves are in addition to the heat shields or if the sleeve replaces the heat shield.
I just replaced mine yesterday with MSD wires. I did not use any additional heat shielding. I could be wrong, but unless different headers are used, it probably isn't necessary. As far as being an expert and able to answer your specific question, I'll punt....
Thanks man. Did you also change plugs, or just wires.
I changed to MSD plugs (#32819) last Sunday. The plugs seem like they are missing about a 1/4 inch to fit perfectly.
I just ordered the Taylor ThuderVolt that looks more like the OEM wire, and also has very low resistance like the MSD.
I watched Froggy's video on youtube on how to change out the plugs, and he recommended reinstalling the same heat shield that was on the old plugs.
I'm also changing back to the AC Delco plugs. I put the new MSD plugs in the engine, and it "No Likey". Six of the MSD plugs came with a .047 gap and two came with a .043. I recalibrated to .040, but it stinks!
Anyways...I ordered a set of sleeves. Can't wait til the weekend to change them.
I did not change plugs since the car only has 7400 miles. I also went with the 32819 wires and they fit great. I didn't want to remove the metal shield from the OEMs since I plan to keep them as spares. Also, I would think putting that heat shield on the aftermarket wires could create more of a heat issue. If you consider having a metal shield directily against the rubberized sleeve of the MSD instead of being surrounded by ambient air, you may cause a "hot spot" if that hot metal touches the wire casing.
The MSDs are advertised as being high temp resistant, therefore I didn't want to create a new problem.
