Default Do all HB's go bad eventually?

With all the threads and posts about bad harmonic balancers is it a given that it is a question of when not if the balancer will go bad eventually? My 05 will be 10 years old in august and still has pretty low miles (13500) and I do not have any balancer problem as of yet. Could I have the car another 10 without a balancer problem or is that just wishful thinking? I know everything wears out eventually. Opinions? Thx Donwil

How will you know when the HB needs to be replaced?

Well, Callaway has 200,000 miles on there C6, but since it has a supercharger, you can bet that the HB has been pinned .... but I am guessing that it is still the OEM HB (not aftermarket).

Of course, I could be wrong

Nobody Knows. All GM balancers are made the same and only some Corvettes have problems. Pickup trucks with the same type balancer go 300,000 miles with no problems. Everyone blames the balancer but I think it is something else. The LS2 motors in GTOs and Caddys don't have any problems with balancers and I don't think the old F-bodys with LS1s did either. I have 61k on my C6 and so far nothing wrong.

The pulley that's mounted to the HB will shake. Noticeable while idling ... more than likely get belt noise (chirping and/or squeeking) too.

Dont worry about it if its ok. It may stay that way or not. I'm sure there are more C6's on the road that never had a problem then there are that did. You could be one of the lucky ones.

I've got over 60K on mine and have had no issues whatsoever from the HB. I have replaced a water pump due to a seal leak, but not many other members have started threads of water pump issues, because that's a pretty minor repair, compared to a HB replacement.
I don't personally believe that the percentage of HB failures is that high.
Forums tend to make it seem that way, because people start threads when they have problems. Forum members rarely start threads to give kudos for their high mileage C6's that haven't had any HB issues.

It's like anything, keep an eye on it, and replace it if it requires a change out.
I can't imagine changing an HB out, just to be on the safe side. Unless one is taking out the engine to do something else, then one may get an aftermarket HB as a heavy duty replacement.

122K on my '08 OEM balancer. Closing in on 500 passes down the 1/4 mile track and ??? WOT blasts in other locations. I would have started a thread to give kudos if LV2TOUR would have told me one was necessary.

It wont have any affect on them coming apart, only slipping on the crank, which I have never heard happening on a stock motor.

This ones been kicked around a few times on the forums with more opinions then horny men in line at Pauleens P#$%Y palace on free piece night. Is yours destined to go bad....absolutely not. Should you keep an eye on it for the infamous "Wobble".....absolutely. The jury is still out on just what percentage of them go bad....but within the knowledgeable car people they seem to agree that's theres just way too many. Some of these post seem to say that they are the same exact balancer that GM put on many cars & trucks and they have no problem. That's interesting. Mine has a slight wobble and I marked it and am just gonna keep an eye on it to see how it goes. Worse case scenario is that it blows a hole in the hood after ripping out half the front of the motor area......LOLOLOL.
