With the 2003 Honda S2000R comming out a bit before the C6, boasting actual sports car weight, with "360 horses, 0-60 mph 4.1, 0-1320 ft 12.8 @ 111.7 mph, Minimum stopping distance From 60 mph 105 ft", will the corvette effectively compete against this car. I know the corvette lives up to the name, but it is still too overweight for the competition where it should be (under 2800lbs). This car boasts a sticker price of ~ $53,000. I don't think by any means it is better then the corvette will ever be, but I do believe that it's a wakeup where the corvette needs to get going faster to beat the others, cut down on weight and the car has no -real- competition for the class. I hope the C6 makes the right changes to stay on top, as their new M-R handling sounds great, and displacement-on-demand would be a much wanted feature to me.
But as usual with Honda, how much Torque does it put out. Different type of car. S2000 has all the hp at 7,500 RPMs (240) and all the torque 157ft lbs at some high RPM as well.
DropHole how did you find this guy's article? Interesting that none of the big Magazines (A/W, MT, R&T, C&D) have not said anything about this car. Since when does Honda make an I-6? Too bad I mentioned anything on this forum prior to looking up this jokers website. :mad
I'm not a big fan of honda by any means, but I was posted this article on IRC, and thought it was interesting/shocking to say the least. I thought I would share it with some fanatics who would have insight on this. I personally could not say if it is true or not, but my main feeling when seeing this is, "how will the corvette compete against other technological advances by other competitors if they decide to step into their field".

M3 just has 333hp and just about out run the C5 so if S2000R with 360hp, man, I don't think C5 can keep up with it unless add a super charger!!!

Mike, I think that story is a joke, we would have heard about this a long time ago with the enthusiast press. Do you think Honda would tool a Inline 6 for a production run that would be a max of 2,000 units? Can you imagine the costs involved. They do V6's not Inlines. This article is a joke. Yep, I know it is just a joke but I just say if Honda ever builds a 360 horsies car, I will feel really sorry for my C5!!! :cry
Even the NSX just got 320 hp with 6 cylinder so there is no way the S2000R will have 360hp :bs :bs

Actually, in terms of competition that might be attractive to the average every day-type driver, the re-issuing of the Nissan Z may be more worrisome. When I was shopping for the Vette I eventually bought back in 95, the competition included Supra, 300Z, Mazda RX7, and even Mitsubishi 3000GT. These all eventually fell from the market as their sizes and prices got bloated to the extent that the Vette was the real bargain. Not to mention the real deals that could be gotten on a Vette due to the presence of the competition.
Looks like the re-invented Z is going back to basics--sharp looks, good performance and a killer price. I have also heard that Mazda may do the same.
The S2000 is great if you are 5'8" and weigh 150 lbs, any larger and the car is just too small. I really wanted to like the car, but when I tried to "strap one on," it just didn't work.

I own a Vette and a NSX. Granted my Vette is a C3, but I love Vettes and I think they offer a great sports car value.
Over on the NSX forum the other owners bring up the C5 and Z06 quite a bit. I think the consensus is that the Z06 is a tremendous car for the money but we do appreciate the mid-engine layout and build quality of the NSX.
I'd also like to point out that even though the Vette has way more HP and torque, the 3.0L or 3.2L V6 is still pretty competitive with the Vette. I have two friends, one with a lightly modded C5 and another with a stock 1992 NSX like mine. They both have similar dragstrip skills. The C5 turned a 13.3 and the NSX turned a 13.5. These numbers are in line with road test reports. Not bad for a 270HP "low torque" V6.
I think both the NSX and the Vette could benefit from each other strengths. Many of the NSXers wish for more horsepower and displacement. They would love to see a V8. After all if Honda can get close to, or even more than 100 HP per liter (e.g. the NSX and S2000) then a 4.5-5.0L V8 would be real interesting.
On the other side I do think Chevy could take a few lessons from Honda on interior and build quality.
