I'm 33 and I can appreciate both, but I personally prefer the blacked out car with chrome wheels. I grew up thinking I nice set of wheels was "Polished Wheels" .
Currently looking for new wheels, mainly to have slightly bigger (19front 20rear). Liking the brushed center wheels with polished lip.
Chrome or polished wheels for me. I do like the blacks on some cars. What I dislike is the plastic chrome pieces that is on cars today. The real metal chrome on old cars is cool.
The color black symbolizes the following:
Power, sophistication, evil, fear, sexuality, elegance, wealth, mystery, depth, style.
(Note: I didn't make this up -Google it )
Chrome symbolizes: carnival mirrors, and yes......... old.
( This I made up )
So do you want your wheels to look evil, powerful, and elegant or do you want them to look like carnival mirrors?
I think you forgot to mention that the color black may also symbolize obnoxiousness - like people with jacked up pickup trucks.

Brushed and polished is my favorite also. Those chrome wheels look sooo much better than black on black. Helps the black paint stand out more.
OP to answer your question........Yes it makes you old.
I personally like black wheels better than chrome on a modern car. I also like the competition gray wheels better than chrome.
And to the person who said black wheel owners are too lazy to keep them clean I will say this......they take just as much work to keep clean and looking good as the chrome do. But a really dirty black wheel looks much better than a really dirty chrome wheel.
Black may take just as long to clean as chrome but when your finished with the chrome wheel it looks great. When you finish with the black wheel you have the same crappy looking wheel you started with.
Black wheel guys are like fat chicks at WalMart -delusional! They put on spandex pants look in the mirror and say "yeah,I look good". Same thing black wheel guy says when he puts black wheels on his vette. Do everyone a favor and leave black wheels in the box. With age comes experience,maturity and knowledge. Youth brings lack of maturity,lack of experience and lack of knowledge. There are exceptions to this but not where black wheels are concerned. Oh one last thing, I HATE BLACK WHEELS!!!. That sounded mature didn't it?
