The problem is the solenoid that locks the shifter in park starts working erratically. Some of the suggestions will work...sometimes. And sometimes they won't. Bad part is that you can't just replace the solenoid. You have to buy a whole new shifter and from what I hear that is about a $600-$800 fix installed. Best to research those facts though. Bottom line is though, no matter how many suggestions you hear on how to get it out of park, theres something wrong with it so you'll need to address it sooner or later. I personally did the wire back the lock out trigger thingy. Problem solved but one needs to know that you won't have to put your foot on the brake anymore to get it our of park. Just something to keep in mind.
I broke my A6 shifter by forcing it out of park. Would only work in D and N.
New shifter was $178 from Gene Culley, and using the Forum for DIY help it took me about 3.5 hours to do the swap.
I had never removed my shift **** or had my console out before, but now I could probably do this in half the time.
A spry young Vette Mechanic, with experience, should be able to do it in an hour.
Broken shift cable is a different issue and more costly to fix, but what OP is describing, I don't think that's the issue.
Good points **** about the doing it in 1/2 the time the second time around. Do you think GM reduces charges after the mechanic learns how to do the job in 1/2 the time ?? Heck no !!!!!....LOL
