DO NOT let anyone take the car for a test drive without you in it.
Bingo...letting them test drive your car without you in it is plain stupid.
They will do burnouts and tear it up without you there...plus they may even steal it.
Common sense not to leave them alone IMOP...
I sold my 2008 on this forum.
List it up and most people who inquire are serious/qualified and interested... since their part of the forum already.
My guy flew in from AR, I met him at the airport he test drove with me inside the car. We then stopped at his bank, they cut me a Certified Check for the amount and I signed over the title. He drove me home...done.

I have never had a problem with this. After the buyer has looked over the car and he has decided he likes the way it looks, sounds, feels, fits and likes the price you simply ask him if the test drive goes good if he is going to buy it. I usually start out taking them for a ride then about 3/4 of the way home I let them drive the rest of the way back. Only one time did I have a guy try to chisel me down after the drive. Its a long story but he ended up paying me $100.00 more than I was asking!
No way i would buy any car without test driving it, i don't care how good it looks or how little miles are on it, there is no way to get a feel for the car without driving it, bringing the car to a stop and feeling the brakes for any pulsing or pull in the steering wheel or feeling the tightness or looseness of the components in the car, i also wouldn't expect anyone to buy my car without a test drive, i do agree that you should be in the car with the prospective buyer, and i wouldn't allow anyone to beat on my car during the test drive, i have learned years ago you can't judge a book by it's cover so trying to size up peoples financial capabilities is difficult, as a buyer i would never hand over a deposit of any kind to test drive a car or give out my financial info, sorry but i don't need the hassle of trying to get my money back should i dislike your car and you get insulted, in most cases a great vehicle will sell itself during a test drive , that's why dealers want to get you into the car before the sale to get people excited about the car and make the sale easier, unless your talking about some sort of super exotic car or a rare collectable i don't see how you can sell a car without letting people give it a test drive, if this is too uncomfortable for you i suggest trading the car in or selling it to a dealer and let them handle the sale, if however your not bank rolled and want to get the cars maximum return back you have to be a little flexible in handling the sale, i bought mine from a member on this forum and i was allowed to test drive before buying with the owner in the car and no cash advances before the sale. by the way i don't think their is anything wrong with asking to see their license or making a copy of it for your own protection.

Not sure where people are getting at that I am not letting them test drive. But anyhow I like the idea of putting down a $500 deposit to cover my deductible and a photo copy of their license is a great idea.
See what you can get in a trade. Many times the sales tax savings makes up for the private sale versus trade it.
I have always traded in my cars and trucks
If its close done deal Not worth the hassle of private sale
Good luck
