Default TPMS Question

Got a question regarding the TPMS system on my 2005. I have read through the forums, but I'm still a bit confused. Anyway, yesterday out of the blue, the "Service TPMS system message came up on the display, and all 4 sensors read XX. I have no idea if these are the original sensors or not, but more importantly, how do I get the system working again? Can it be reset by myself, a local tire shop, or does the dealer have to do it? And what kind of cost am I looking at?

Thanks for helping

Glenn

Discount Tire will usually do a reset for free. I had XX on one of mine just before getting new rear tires. I had all 4 replaced and that fixed it. If yours are original the batteries are at the end of their life. You can try having them reset but if the alert comes back you need to replace them.

My tpms sensor tool reads battery condition, psi, etc. Most tire shops tpms tools do the same. You can have the battery condition checked. I doubt all 4 of your tpms batteries went dead at once, so you may have a different problem. Has anybody been messing with car lately that may have caused this? to program the tpms's you have to put your car in accessory mode and hold lock and unlock on your fob.

So I can program the TPMS sensors in my driveway just by putting the car in accessory mode and then holding both the lock and unlock buttons on the fob at the same time?

If so, then how long do you have to hold the fob buttons, and do you have to be by the tire you want to program each time. Thank you,

Glenn

No, you have to have the reset tool. Holding the lock/unlock buttons just puts the car into TPMS learn mode. Then you would use the tool at each sensor to reset them.
