Sounds like a reboot of the ECM is in order, discount the battery for minute, reattachment, and don't forget to re-index the windows.
Sometimes this is a fix all to electrical issues.

This, or could be a loose/corroded connector on the gauge pod.
The dash gauge pod is easy enough to pull out of the dash to check the connectors, and even to check for a cold solder joint on the board as well once you have it out of the dash.

If you have a HUD the same signal operates both and would eliminate about half the connections and components if the HUD still worked or didn't. My first guess would be the servo motor in the dash. But, without more information, at this point everything is just a guess.

The HUD still works it's just the tachometer that doesn't

If the HUD reads rpm then that leaves only the dark green/white wire on pin 6 of the instrument panel connector C2 and something on the panel itself. There are 2 16 pin connectors. C1 has the dark green/white wire on pin 16 which is in the corner. C2 (the one you want) has it on pin 6 which is the third wire over. I'm still leaning toward the servo stepper motor but at least it has been narrowed down to the panel itself or the wire to the panel. A dealer is just going to replace the whole panel which is going to be expensive. I think the next step is to remove the panel and see if you can trace the wire to the logic circuit and from the motor to the logic circuit. The digital logic is probably not the issue since the other gauges still work.
