Ugh! How bad must the quality control be on these things?
I bought my '05 used in October '13 and the HVAC unit started blinking about 6 months later. I got a good deal at one of our forum vendors too - $450 for a $650 part though $450 is still pretty steep. Replaced it easily.
Here it is only 9 months later and IT'S BLINKING AGAIN! Come on! No suggestions helped remedy it and it's not easily reparable like the C5 units were. The only thing that worked was a replacement.
I'm not sure that a conclusion can be drawn about the quality control of a part unless it is first known how old the replacement part is. If the replacement part you bought is new, it should be covered by warranty. The fact that the initial HVAC control head in your car failed after ten years would not in itself seem to be indicative of poor quality control to me. If every electronic part on my '08 lasts ten years, I'll be a pretty happy customer.
