So I hit a decent sized pothole a few weeks back, but nothing came from it, thankfully. I took the tire off today while removing the bumper and noticed this on the LG G2 coilover. It definitely doesn't look right...could it be a problem if I leave it as is?
I saw LGs youtube video where they run their Vette over a 6x6 block several times without any problems to the frame, shock mounts, or coil overs. It's what got me sold to buy from them when the time is right. I hope their product is as good as advertised in terms of durability.
My money is on environmental damage.
That looks like rubber that has had all of the VOC's drained out of it from exposure to the elements.
I see the same weather check pattern further to the back.
Likely no real issue other than losing a smidge of rebound on your shock
Got to ask, have you been tailing the salt trucks/driving in salt water, or was the coil over install done during the Holy wars?
Myself, would pull the shocks and coils off, give them (and other steel parts) a good cleaning and touch up the rusted parts to re-protect them, install new rubber compression parts that have dried out and cracking, and even have the shocks compression and rebound checked to make sure that they did not need to be rebuilt as well.
I bought the car with 5k miles a few weeks ago, so likely less than 2k miles on them.
With only 7K on the car, the shocks should be fine, but someone must of stored that car at the beach (salt water) to see that amount of rust.
Just pull the coil overs, get the rust off the steel parts (navel jelly will work), give them a coat of paint to re-protect them so they don't rust through, and replace the the rubber bushings that have dried out.

Get it checked to be safe. I have broken 2 GT2's in the past. Both were replaced by LG.
