Default altitude adjustment question

Im taking my 08 to red rocks amphitheater from Oregon and plan to climb pikes peak. Is there any problems that my occur at 14k feet? Ive heard carb engines may not start with the lack of oxygen.

If you see other cars there, I'm sure yours will be okay.

Also, if you can breathe there, I'm sure you car can also.

The ECM will self-adjust for the reduced air pressure at higher altitude.

You should not have any problems, although it might run better with the cleaner CO air be careful when accelerating

With less oxygen, the car will be slower at high elevation...other than that, all will be fine.

I was coming down Monitor Pass last year at 8500ft and tried to pass but had no power, in fact I think a Prius could have passed me.

Actually, how does the computer adjust cranking fuel at start up? With the lack of oxygen, does the computer compensate by increasing the opening of the throttle blade? I understand at idle and cruise, fuel trims will adjust, but cranking fuel at 14k feet?

Several years ago the Colorado Springs Corvette Club had a ralley to the peak. All cars made the climb without a problem. So should you.

Manifold air pressure sensor.
At sea level, it will read around 14.7psi at start, while say in Denver, it will read around 10.2psi instead at start up.

You will lose about 3% horsepower per thousand feet of altitude. So at the 10,000' mark you will only have 301 hp in a base model LS3 C6 Corvette with no NPP.

No problem unless you retro fitted something like dual Hollys to your C6.

At higher elevations, many gas stations do not sell Premium; you can't pull enough power to need the extra knock protection.

But if you have to buy gas up high and then descend to lower elevation, the Regular or Mid Grade you bought will cost you some power down low and could cause pinging/knocking if the ECM doesn't retard timing enough.

You don't want to run out of gas, but buy only what you need if Premium isn't available.
And there seem to be whole counties in the boonies that have never heard of Top Tier detergent gasoline.

Won't be a problem for your car. I run 85 octane in my 2012 GS without any problems. You on the other hand may have problems. When you get to the top of Pikes Peak, don't do anything sudden. You will probably feel the lack of O2 as soon as you get out of the car and walk a few steps. Just take it easy. Be sure to sample the donuts at the gift shop, and take a camera. Pikes Peak is in my back yard, and I love driving up it. It's now paved all the way up until you get to the top. Be sure to cruise through Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs while you're here.

I had planned to walk to the very top in the center of the parking area, but only made it a few feet before turning back to the car. Several minutes later I managed to take this photo and then went back down the hill. Now that it's paved all the way, I'll do it again in late Summer. That's a warning to plan trips according to weather conditions when possible. This photo was taken June 17, 2009 and the road had just opened for the season a few days earlier.
