Default TPMS sensor question

Hi all!

Today I received my TPMS tool.

It's the Autel TS401

It seems to work well, I can re-learn the 4 sensors on my C6 (2006) quite easily.

One question i'm having. When the sensor information is fed back to my tool, I get it's serial, frequency and tire pressure. But battery status and temperature are both "n/a".

Now my car has been sitting for 2-3 days. It is possible that those only get read when the sensors are "woken up" by driving?

I suspect i'll need to replace the sensors soon since they are likely the originals, but I was expecting to see some battery info.

Thanks!

I think that the newer sensors give more info. On my tool, my '07 Vert gives serial # and pressure but with my new SUV I get the temp also.

Sounds right!

I checked a few other vehicles and they give off all the info.

thanks!

Don't be premature in replacing the sensors...One set of wheels of mine is from 2006 and the sensors are working fine. They sleep when not being driven, so if the car has low miles, they could very well go more than 10 years.

You're right!

Mine has 55,000km (34,000 miles) so it's not too bad i guess.

Thanks for the info!

While we're on the subject...

The left front sensor seems suspect to me.

It has, in the last few rides, 3 times declared a flat (zero pressure) and moments later comes back to regular pressure.
Also, the same sensor takes at least 10-15 or 20 minutes to wake up when I take the car for a ride. The other 3 sensors wake up within a minute or so but this one does not update until i've been driving for anything between 10 to 20 minutes.

So, between taking long to wake up and reporting false zeroes, would you say it's due?

The rear left is also causing something weird. It goes from 230kpa (metric) to 180kpa on random. It'll stay there for a minute or two and then go back to reporting regular pressure. Thankfully it doesnt trigger an alarm (i think it has to fall below 160 to trigger) but it's got me thinking it's bad also.

Thoughts?

Unfortunately these symptoms sound like batteries getting low to me. Maybe Bob, BEZ06 will chime in...he is the undisputed authority on the TPMS system.

Would love to hear from Bob if he's around!

I just read another post from 2013 of someone saying chrome caps on his tpms valves were causing problems. My gut feeling is yelling BS, but is there any truth to this?

Another question.

i'm sure someone has tried this. Can you learn the same sensor on all 4 corners?
This would get rid of the occasional errors until i can get the sensor replaced.
In other words, go through the re-learn procedure but keep triggering the same wheel.

Of course this would make all pressures the same and completely useless, but hey, I drove for many years without those to begin with! Just want to know if it can work!

I'd suggest you replace the misbehaving tire sensors with new ones.

Most likely your one sensor is failing. I have 125K miles on my '08, but only 115K on the sensors and one is starting to fail.

Yes, on your question. The car receives the data during a re-learn procedure incrementally. So if you have one failing, simply bypass that one in the order and do the next one twice. That'll give you DIC readouts from 3 of 4 locations and you'll mentally need to remember which wheel is missing, since the reading will be identical to the next one in the order.
Hey, 3 out of 4 ain't that bad.

Well, finally got around to trying that and it doesnt work. The car doesn't let you do the same sensor twice. my TPMS tool will trigger the sensor, but the car horn doesnt sound until you give it a different sensor.

Oh well, it was worth trying!

Damn. I hate it when the car is smarter than me. And it happens a lot.
