2011 GS, A6, 13K miles. Last night, I am leaving my gym when all of a sudden a loud, metal on metal sound starts coming from the passenger side rear around the tire area. it was a cyclic noise getting louder as I increased the speed to about 20 MPH. I pulled into a near by parking lot, looked everywhere for something hanging or wrapped around my rear tire, nothing found. The brakes and calipers were not hot, parking braking not sticking, nothing I could see. I got back into the car, drove on home with no problems. however, I will bet it will come back soon. Very loud, metal sounding.
Anyone ever had this before? James
Is it possible that you ran over something that caused the noise, then came off and you couldn't find it? That would certainly be the least expensive thing that could have happened.
Hopefully, you picked up something that fell away before you stopped.
If the noise went away, that's a good thing.
If it was something serious, the noise doesn't go away just like that.
My wife told me her car was making a scraping noise the other day. After a test drive, with the same noise, I pulled the wheel, and it was the rotor backing plate scraping on the back of the rotor. Something must of hit it and pushed it close to the rotor. I pried it away, and all is good.
While your checking the back, check the brake caliper bolts, mi e backed out at 5000 miles and the caliper dropped on the wheel... Thank God, there is only a minor score around the inside of the wheel.
I found out today it could be the simplest things when it comes to a noise you can't locate. Driving my Honda the last 2 days I hear a flapping sound that seemed to be coming from inside the dash,Only at speeds 50 and greater. Turned out to be the rubber moulding around the windshield located near the top where I couldn't see it from inside the vehicle. The faster I went, the louder it got.hopefully it's something minor.
The noise was about the same speed as the wheel turn, sounding just like a rock or metal object against the brakes or rotors. I pulled out and about 10 mph it started and i made it to about 20 mph and was able to get back into a parking lot. Touching the calipers and rotors, nothing seemed hot or scorned. I drove another 20 miles to my home and never heard it again.
This weekend I will pull the rear wheel and look a little closer. I just dont want this to sneak up and become a huge problem on the side of the road.

You should put the car on a lift (from a trusting garage) to check behind the rear area. If there is a bit of gouging behind the rotor, it's not good but at least you'd have peace of mind knowing it came and left!
If you were close by I'd say bring it over. Absolutely at no charge!
