the most common chirps are the harmonic balancer and the belt tensioner located on the top front on the passenger side.
if you want to try and find the problem, when the chirp is occurring use some spray lubricant to isolate the offender. I suspect however it is the HB that is going bad.
Let me ask this please, what kind of percentages are we talking about for HB's failing, anyone know or like to guess??
Is there any certain years that are plagued by this than other years, like early C-6 or late models???
Just wondering

No year is spared on the C6.
No accurate percentage will ever be available simply because we will never know about the thousands of owners that got their HB replaced without saying anything to anyone; and you can bet whatever is dear to you, that GM won't care to share these numbers (but trust me, they know all about it).
All that can be said by the sole feedback provided on this board, is that this issue qualifies as a "systemic" failure, and I don't think anyone with reason will invalidate this.

For me, it was 100% of all GM harmonic balancers that failed.
Yes it does sound like the HB. Check for wobble.
And don't feel bad about creating thread # 1019 on the HB going bad... some will STILL tell you that there is nothing systematically wrong with the GM HB.
If you see a wobble on it, throw that piece of garbage in the trash, and install a REAL HB (ATI or Powerbond).
Worth the piece of mind, and I speak from experience looking at my ATI spin true and quiet, after having heard the squealing pig under the hood on cold starts (with the GM trash).
(Or listen to the ones that will tell you there is nothing wrong with a little wobble on the HB, and sing along the chirping birds when you start your car, keeping fingers crossed that the damn thing will not come apart under the hood while spinning at a few thousand RPM)
Bought my 05 Z51 last month & thanks to this thread, noticed the HB wobble. Fortunately, the Chevy dealer I bought from includes a Lifetime Powertrain warranty with their Chevy sales. And, the service manager is allowing me to replace the junk GM balancer with a Powerbond. I am purchasing the HB (and a new HB bolt & Serpentine belt) on my own, but they are putting it in for no cost!
I am very happy with this deal! I get a better HB that should be good for the like of the car & don't have to "keep an eye on it" for ever increasing wobble!

Well done! And congrats on the 05 Z! I've had mine for a couple of years now, and love it.
Haha so glad I found this thread...my 13 Vert is in having his harmonic balancer replaced as we speak. Just over 36K miles, no track driving, just a little "spirited" street work.
Developed the "chirp of death" about a month ago. Idler pulley was replaced but the crickets decided to stay.
Since it's fully covered by warranty I'm letting them install an OEM unit...this time.

they won't install any but the OEM under warranty. If you think you are 'letting them' you are delusional.
