Brought the Vette to Durango over a month ago. Have had a great time. Drove over to Silverton on the 550. Fun. If you head out of Silverton the other direction, it becomes the most dangerous highway in the country. I have been over it, but not with the Vette. Brother-in-law did it earlier this summer.
Yesterday the wife and I drove to Mancos and then to Cortez. Nice drive. Will want to get it back to Denver before snow hits.

Having never been out West; could you explain what you mean by this : "If you head out of Silverton the other direction, it becomes the most dangerous highway in the country." You've peaked my curiosity

Looks like others have answered your question. Short answer: Silverton is a small town. Head out on 550 north or head out 550 south. Those are your options.
BTW: smoke from the Washington fires are a problem. Skies smoked up, not pretty at all.
The smoke is horrible anywhere in the west these days! Here in Boise it's nasty but, I really feel for the folks who have lost their home and those in jeopardy of losing theirs.

Yes ; my question has been answered. I thank you gentlemen.
My son lives in SF and I'm considering a trip thru the West and National Parks to photograph everything; then heading to SF. It won't be this year.
I love visiting Durango. The Honeyville shop is a MUST. The drive out of Silverton towards Ouray is gorgeous, but nearly impassable in the winter. The Fall is a great time to attempt that drive with the Aspen leaves changing colors.

My wife loves Honeyville. May come back when the Aspens are changing this fall. Wife has a trip here scheduled early October. Taking one of my grandson's out for a Dude Time lunch. Grandkids love the Vette. A special time for them. Papa, too.

We've driven it both ways in our C6, IIRC there is a monument to the snow plow drivers who have lost their lives on that road during winter.
The road's slogan is:
"Real men don't need guard rails."
