I've seen a lot of posts where coil/spark plug wires are popping off causing various messages and check engine light and obvious rough running. Any ideas on the root cause (wire itself, vibration, heat) it seems to me that this has been more than a coincidence of a common issue?
I would say probably because they are not getting snapped on there as tight as they should be. I changed mine a year ago and never have had one fall off.

I never checked them from the day I took delivery. 2013 Z06 .Happened at about 3,400 miles.

Did you replace them with OEM wires or did you go with something else?
Are they happening at the coil or spark plug end of the wires? Maybe when someone is wiping down the engine bay, they hit the wires somehow.
Mine happened at the coil. I purchased the car a couple months ago with 450 miles on it. It was practically new so no engine wiping on my end. I will check them periodically though from now on. Heading to the dealer end of the week so I'll get them to check them since I still have some warranty left. No problems since re-attaching the wire.

When you install a plug wire on the plug or into the coil pack you get a definite click when it is properly inserted. I have never seen one come loose when the wire is pushed "Home" properly..

Coil end, and I never touched, removed or wiped anything. I bought it new with 2 miles, It didn't happen till around 3500-4000 miles on the car. Now at 8500 and not a single other one or that one has popped off since.
Weirdest thing about it was, It was completely fine when I parked it. No lights, no messages. Came out of the store in 15 minutes and started the car. Ran like crap and the messages and light lit up.
It was hot out and mid-afternoon, so I would guess heat along with trapped air in the boot, plus maybe not on all the way when assembled. Can't say for sure.

Based on all the reading I've done as concerns this subject, this scenario does not seem to occur when the wire is properly "seated", on both ends.
I purchased my car new, with 3 miles on the clock.
I now have 7,800 miles, and have never experienced this issue, nor have I touched the wires.
It does seem to be a factory issue, effecting some engines, and not others.

I also add a dab of dielectric grease in the boot ends. Checking your plug wires is common sense, like putting gas in your car. IMO

Don, I would respectfully disagree. Plugs are something's I would never consider checking. Fluids etc, maybe, but I largely rely on nanny indicators and gauges. That said my wires have come off TWICE on my 13 auto GS. I blame shoddy assembly and a crummy dealership. I would assume GM really don't care too much as quality control has never been their forte.

Similar situation. Waiting in line for about 30 minutes to enter Carlisle engine temperature on the high side then came the traction and engine lights along with the car running rough. On a suggestion I checked the wires and one was disconnected at the coil end. Reattached listened for click actually 2 clicks, when doing so, and all is fine. As I mentioned earlier it took a few hours for the engine light to reset
