Default Rear wheel offset

Made a trip in my 05 C6 to pick some things up at the store. When I came out the car beside me was parked crooked so I turned the side mirrors down to get a better view. I was able to see the rear wheels and the passenger side appeared to be farther out. Checked them with a straight edge when I got home and found the passenger side was a little more than 1/4" outward. Is it supposed to be like that?

Supposed to be like that?

I doubt it but due to manufacturing tolerances it's pretty common.

Not that unusual, and those that have noticed this reported that the right side is the one that 'protrudes' further.

Puzzling to say the least, but it doesn't seem to adversely affect anything.

Whole rear cradle is probably off, but within tolerances for stock, Which is one reason they don't make the wheels flush to the fenders so they have play and they won't rub.

A good reason not to push to the outer limits when you get aftermarket wheels with custom offsets. It might be fine on one car but not on another.

Thanks all for the replies. It just surprised me when I noticed the difference. May see about shifting the cradle.

Some of the difference may be due to the body sitting a bit uneven. If you're measuring the distance between the top of the tire and the quarter panel lip, then some of the difference could be due to differences in camber between the two sides.

The GM spec for rear camber is very loose. -0.45 deg +/- 0.60 deg on coupes and verts. It's possible that one side is nearly 0 deg camber, while the other is nearly -1.0 deg. That difference in camber alone could result in a measurable difference in the location of the top of the tire with respect to the quarter panel lip.

I came to this conclusion (verified by trig) after noticing this same disparity on my car, and taking some basic measurements and checks with a level.

Get your alignment checked and let us know. Mine is due in for an alignment soon too, so I'll be curious to see the pre-alignment values.
