My 2007 C6 has a 6 speed stick. There is a feature whereby if there is no big demand for power coming out of first gear, the transmission will not shift into second. The shift gate gets locked so I have to go directly from 1st to 3rd. A light on the dash indicates this is engaged.
Pain in the butt. I hate it. Is there a way to defeat this 'feature' so I can shift as I choose?
You can shift at a lower RPM or shift at a higher RPM. When the light for the shift from 1st - 4th goes out then shift. Or you can buy a bypass. look in the search and you'll find more info on it. I did. I asked the same question and I just shift at lower rpm or higher. Once you get used to it it will be second nature.
Its called a CAGS solenoid that locks you out of 2 and 3 gears.
Here is the write up on changing the fuse in the engine bay to disable the CAGS solenoid in the trans (1-4 shift on the dash will still light up) without getting any codes.
As for disabling the dash light (and the CAGS solenoid system from engaging in the first place), that can be done in a tune instead so the system does not kick in the CAGS system to begin with.
Page 193 of your 2007 owner's manual tells you how to avoid this situation.
One-to-Four Shift Light
(Manual Transmission)
When this light comes
on, you can only shift
from FIRST (1) to
FOURTH (4) instead of
FIRST (1) to
SECOND (2).
This light will come on when:
• The engine coolant temperature is higher than
169°F (76°C),
• the vehicle is going 15 to 19 mph
(24 to 31 km/h) and
• the vehicle 21 percent throttle or less.
