Your point is valid, but why does steering have to be heavy at 5 mph or even 55 mph? Steering effort has been adjustable by ECM and valving for many years. My 1994 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi (supercharged) had ECM-adjusted steering effort it and it worked pretty good.... light steering effort at low speeds and then effort increased with high speeds.

This whole thing about heavy steering really kills many modern cars for me. We spend 99.99% of our time driving around at safe, slow speeds. At those speeds, steering should be relatively light.

Peace.....

I think this is something we are going to have to live with. There doesn't seem to be an easy fix. The feel is the same if parked and turning lock to lock or driving at any speed It has to be the rack.

I ordered a P.S, pump and line.. Will be here in a few days.. And i got a G.M pump coming for 65.00.. at cost thru my work place. Didnt know g.m had reman ?? for my 06..

I figured i give it a shot,, As i see alot of pump's changed because of leaks.. Mine isn't.

Gotta try something.. As it is now, if i come into a curve that everyone can fly into and out of .. and i have to let off gas going into - NO GOOD..
Seems mine is worse than other's on here.
Still waiting for corvette club here , and a member to contact me.. So as to compare veh's..

With veh in the air,,, or drivers side jacked up -- Look for connector that is the wire harness to steering gear..
Unhook connector and at the connector (wire to rack) -- (Make sure it's the rack side of connector) - Use a ohm meter and hook to both ! connector terminal's..

And should read between 1.6 -3.1 ohms.. Or better yet-- 2 ohms.

Then with ohm meter,- hook one lead to one of the wire's in the connector
And then hook other wire from ohm meter to rack. -
This checks for the coils in rack being shorted to ground. (BAD)
Then do the same with the second wire in the connector..

Stupid me havent done it yet,, and i ordered pump today...
Just found this info a few ours ago..

make sure nothing is touching the steering column itself, Ive seen wrong motor mounts cause the exhaust manifolds to rub the steering column, and right headers for the engine but wrong for the car touch the steering column. have also seen a bad bushing in the steering column itself. that's just free stuff to check with your eyes. good luck

Default Tire Pressure

I have the same issue with steering effort.

1. Recommended tire is too low
2. I set mine to 37-38 psi with a tire gauge not the tire pressure monitor system. TPS on my reads about 2 + psi low

The higher pressure helped a lot

37-38 cold ?? That's high... Must ride awful hard over bumps and or cause tire wear, and when they heat up that can cause over pressure warning to pop up..

Of course the ride is a little stiffer. However the car feels tighter and responds a bit quicker when you accelerate or turn. My BMW 535i recommends a 38 psi tire pressure.. Try it if you do not like it, lower the pressure, easy!
One other benefit is that the tires, rear for sure, will wear better as the middle of the wide tire will have better contact with the ground.
Give it a try, what do you have to lose?

I always set mine 30 cold.... and had just replaced my tire's this past summer (2018) The rear were worn even across tread with half tread life left... - Front had half tread life and worn even across with a little slight ware on r/f tire at outer tread... I only replaced tires as they were old and dry rotted....
When i had rear tires put on the car, the garage set them at 37 cold and that was way to hard and also lack of traction... and car bounce over bumps.

I came from owning a 2010 Camaro SS for 5 years and the steering on this Vette is WAY heavier than in the Camaro. It kind of makes the Vette feel heavy. The Camaro was a heavier car but the steering made it feel lighter. Is there anything I can change or upgrade to make the steering "lighter"?
Wow you got a lot of replies. I traded my 2011 SS/RS LS3 Camaro last August for a 2006 3LT A6 base convertible. Yes , my first impression was that the steering was heavy. Like driving a car without power steering. I have since replaced every fluid in the car including siphoning the PS fluid out multiple times. 45,000 miles on the car and the fluid was smelly and dark. Now the steering seems lighter. Or, I am getting used to.it. no leaks that I can see in the rack. Maybe just an inherent trait of the early C6s .
