Default An interesting experience

In a moment of weakness I went by the local Dodge dealer to look at a new SRT Challenger. The car retailed for 48500,
I asked the sales mgr to take a look at my flawless 2008 a6 coupe (20000 miles, 3lt interior, all options) and give me a figure for a possible trade.
After about 10 minutes, he came back with a printout (Get ready..)
Value of my car on trade: 24500
amount paid in addition to trade: 24000
In other words, he was going to give me 24500 for my car and full retail for the SRT
I looked at him over my glasses with my best college professor gaze and asked him what kind of dope he had been smoking.
I then told him that we had nothing further to discuss and I was sorry to have wasted my time. I walked outside, took the top off my car, stowed it and drove slowly by the front of the showroom.
Like my old Evolution ElectraGlide, I guess my Vette will assume the status of cherished family heirloom.I' keeping it for a while.
(by the way, I have bought several cars from these clowns)
Now, as they say down home, is the real hell of it: the same company has a used car lot 1 mile down the street. They have a blue 2008 2lt with 30k miles on it for 32500.
Cheers
Bill

As much as they low balled you, they are there to make money.

I don't blame you for walking on that offer... but if you really wanted the SRT, you could have talked them up on yours some and well down off of sticker. Still might not have made the #s work for you, but I'd be shocked if their initial offer was their final offer.

When I bought my 09 Challenger RT there was a high demand and low supply so I paid sticker. Now it's the other way around and if you shopped around many Dodge dealers are willing to negotiate on all except maybe the Hellcat models. While the Challenger is a nice enough car, it's no Corvette. I like driving my Challenger on long road trips because it holds more luggage (My wife packs heavy for trips) and gets slightly better mileage than my C6. But when I want to go fast, I drive my C6.

I agree. Our family "bus" is a 2014 Dodge Charger R/T. Very comfortable on the interstate, nice interior, great sound system. 5.7 liter Hemi and 5 speed auto..basically a cop car with a cushy interior.Must be something wrong with your vette if it gets worse mileage than Challenger unless Chally is a V6.
Basically Charger is the same car as the Challenger (hard to tell them apart from underneath on the lift)except it is 4 door.
Reason I wanted the SRT was that great Honkin' 392 Hemi and the 6 speed.(and I have a strange thing for Mopar) WOW!!
C6 does the trick but I kinda wish it had been a manual instead of A6.
Wish in one hand and $#!^ in the other as grandma used to say....Gonna drive the Vette to work tomorrow with the top off.

I don't understand. if you were serious, why not tell them what you want for your car? they are going to low ball you, and they are going to want as much as they can get for their car as well. your job is to allow them to be a business and make a little money, but not a greedy amount of money. there is so much data on cars available to the public now, you should be comfortable pricing your car and their car. my rule of thumb is to allow them to make up to 1k on the trade and 1k on the new car, otherwise I'd rather sell myself.

at the end of the day, you went home with the better car anyways.. that thing is a big fat boat

They had to start somewhere, and honestly his number on your car while low, wasn't that out of line. Where he tried to gouge you was MSRP on the Dodge.

Get several prices, doesn't matter how they juggle the numbers, the only number that matters is the cash difference between the two vehicles.

I don't see that being totally out line. Dealers use current auction prices and not Kelly Blue Book, but KBB gives a trade in value of $26,900 for an 08, 3lt, 20k miles. In my experience dealers trade in offers are always less than KBB. Sounds like you might have some emotional attachment or the corvette fever expecting it to be worth more than it is. Good thing is you own a Corvette and not an Accord, so keeping it isn't really gonna make you sad.

Sounds about normal to me, especially as a starting point.

I have never had a Dealer give me a first time price I was happy with.
I have even walked over $500, they never let me leave and always made a deal.

"the same company has a used car lot 1 mile down the street. They have a blue 2008 2lt with 30k miles on it for 32500."
I doubt anyone will end up paying that much.

Unreal Bill, I had the same experience almost to a T.

I went to look at a 2012 Challenger, low miles very nice, at a local Dodge dealership. I wanted to trade in my '94 vert which I just sold. They wold only give me $3500! My vette is in great condition, I had all the work documentation to show. There response was they would need to put $2000 into it and then only be able to sell it for $7000. I actually laughed out loud at the salesman.

Unreal, auto sales might be the shadiest business in america. Outside of government.

Their starting price is about what is expected for a nice low mile 9 year old base Corvette. The first price is always a low-ball, just in case the buyer is a sucker.

After a minute of haggle, you probably would be up a couple thousand to $26500 Trade-In value... about avg for trade-in on your car. If you had kept going, I would expect the final numbers prob would have prob been around $20k-$21k diff, +TTL.

What were you hoping for?

I had a dealer offer me 3k on a trade in once. I said no, 6.5k. And they said ok.

Get the price for cash deal first -

Then bring in the trade next time.
