Default c6 auto thinks its in reverse

Hi. When pulling into my driveway with my C6 auto base coupe LS1. I turned it off, then turned it back on quickly to back out, moved back a few feet then put it into park and shut it off. The battery died. I tried to move the shifter but it got stuck in neutral/drive. Using the forum I opened the shifter and was able to get it back into park but the reverse lights are still on. It will not start. I have a charger on the new battery and it is registering 12.1 volts with a charger on it. I get the green circle to start. Before it was saying put in Park but now the gearshift is in park and it doesn't say that anymore. Won't start. Now flashes "Service the vehicle soon".

I manually moved the shift cable with gear shift in Park and reverse lights stayed on.

All the electrical works.

This is my first time posting. Appreciate any guidance. I've been a vette owner for 20 years. This is a new 2007 C6 for me.

Thanks in advance. I'm not sure how I'll get notified. My email is rkahn@fpg-usa.com I'm in Homestead, Florida 33035

To start in your profile you should have put your email address so you can see when someone responds to your request. The forum will send you an email with any replies (you must visit the forum once a day to make sure you get notifications). It also lets your address stay private. Edit your post above and remove your email address.

Second see if your battery is still OK. Putting a meter across the terminals will not load test the battery to see if it has any life. Assuming you have a new battery make sure it is good. Did you disconnect the old battery when you installed the new one? If you kept a charger on the battery leads while you were changing batteries remove the + cable and let the computers reset. See if that makes a difference. You will have to re-index the windows.

Thx. I tried to find my email address in my profile but was unable to do so. I did find an email notice in my inbox and wonder if I did that when registering or you were kind enough and able to do so. Thx if that's the case.

Batter indicator on dash says between 12.1 and 11.6. I have a 10amp charge on the batter as I mess with it. I tried 50 amp charge to, because I read somewhere that the starter has to have 12.6amps to start. But I wasn't able to get it up past 12.1. I have it charging at 10 amps deep cycle now over night and will see in morning if it goes higher.

I may have created another problem inadvertently. When I removed the 4 shifter housing nuts and removed the shifter, on replacing it I felt the the rigid end of the shifter cable snap out of it's bracket. I could see the cable when I slid the plastic housing forward. I was unable to get the end of the cable back on the shifter tip where it sat originally. I was trying to do this in park. I might have had better luck in Drive or Neutral.

I now looked in my service manual and see there is a clip that holds it, so I suppose I will have to take it all apart and reinstall the plastic housing into that bracket, hoping it allows that.

What I was wondering is, I didn't see a clip or anything at the end of the shift lever where the cable sits. Now I'm thinking the bracket keeps it rigid and that's how it stays on. I'm thinking it wouldn't be a bad idea to twist tie it on when I get back in there.

Any thoughts on this? I still cannot get the vehicle to start when I press the brake and the green button.

Another thing. My back up lights are on. I'm wondering if car "thinks" its in reverse or they are supposed to be on in this situation.

I'm very happy to have found this resource. I previously had a 1959 for nearly 20 years. I did a ground up restoration on it. I sold it in 2003 for a down payment on our house. Now that the kids are driving I don't need a 4 door and am back to the vette. I suppose I have a learning curve here. I've taken apart and put several cars back together over the years, so I feel up to the challenge.

Thanks!

How is the battery after a nights charge? You really can't test the battery without a load. The meter on the dash or a hand held meter won't help. The car will never start if it thinks it is in reverse. Look through the forum post below to see pictures that may help.

I figured out the problems. I made post with the solutions and it also explains why the shifter cable snapped and why the vette was stuck in reverse. Thanks for the comments. This is a solution from an experienced owner who works on his vehicles and boats that are out of warranty. Here you go: This was the title of my post. New at this so I asked Tadge instead of posting a thread. I don't know how to do that directly yet. This is my 3rd or 4th post. I'll learn. GREAT venue. Thanks! c6 Shift cable snapped - shifter locked solutions
