Default How fitting... A4 shift cable

I drove home from work Monday night, pulled up in front of the house and went to back into the garage. The selector went to R but the car stayed in D. I knew instantly what it was. Shortly after buying the car I had the same issue which resulted in a simple (sorta) bushing replacing on the end of the gear selector.
I was able to nose it into the garage and turn it off. Being stuck in D though I wouldn't be able to re-start it. I got under the vehicle and got the shifter back into N so I could get it started again.
This entire incident caught me at a bad time. I'm in class all week with zero free time. So......
I called roadside and had it towed to Westside Chevrolet here in Katy. I have a very good friend that writes service there and they actually have a
Corvette tech (now what that means exactly, I have no idea) that comes highly recommended.
I had it towed in last night and got a call this morning around 10 that it was indeed the shift cable. It had broken (from my previous repair attempt) and had lasted this long until the metal cable inside stretched enough to no longer be effective.
$394 later with my buddy discount I am back on the road.
I just thought it fitting that on the home page for the forum this very issue was the topic.
Oh, and they did the headlight recall.

The shifter cable is under $50 brand new, and as for how you adjust it, trans in park/ shifter in park, on the left hand side of the cable you posted, there is a clip piece that you remove before hand on the end side of the cable, and once the trans and shifter are sync'd together, the side clip piece is re-installled to lock the cable lenght in place.

This wasn't an adjustment issue. If you look at the black end of the cable, then about 8" back you can see where the molded plastic that houses the 'cable' broke. Only fix was a new cable.
The task is in the labor. The mid pipe has to be removed to gain access to the torque tunnel ro whatever it's called.
