Are you saying you've never waxed a car?

Watch the movie "Karate Kid" and then read the directions on the wax. Wax on wax off.

The amount of work needed is proportional to your expectations. Do you want just a coat of wax for limited protection, but don't particularly care how it looks? Or do you want a flawless, "show car" finish? Or something in between?

You can buy an off-the-counter wax at an auto parts store or Walmart, or you can learn all about detailing by reading the Car Care Discussion forum here and reading all the tutorials on the Auto Geek website. Buy once you become addicted to detailing it can be an expensive hobby!

Do a search on YouTube for a guy going by Junkman2000. He has several videos on detailing. He mainly uses a variable speed random orbit polisher from Porter Cable.

He's pretty long winded so be prepared.

Waxing is the final step after paint correction to remove the scratches, swirls and holograms in the paint. This process can take hours using the proper power buffers and products. then comes the sealer and last is the wax. Go to the AutoGeek website and view the "How to "videos. these are the best videos I have ever seen on the proper technique, equipment and products.

If all you want to do is wash the car then wax it that is easy. Wash, dry, apply wax let it haze over and remove. Done car is washed and waxed.

If you want to car to be show ready there is a lot more involved after the wash and dry. Step one is to clay bar the complete car. A corvette can be done in less then an hour in most instances. After that you need to do what ever paint correction that is need to remove the swirls, and minor scratches, then polish then paint finish this is what makes it shine. Follow that with a good quality paint sealer, and finish it off with a good paste wax. Al this will take a few days if you do it right and I recommend a good random orbital buffer. Don't try and use a high speed circular buffer unless you have a lot of experience with them. You will end up doing more harm then good with one.

Having owned 3 Corvettes, 3 Mercedes, various Fords, Chrysler products, etc......use what works best for you! AND....quite frankly, some wax products work better on some manufacturers paint than others.....you will get all kinds advice on what works best on Vettes right here......but for me: Zaino on the Vette....on the 3 Vettes for the past 13yrs...nothing has been better! ....but on my Subaru..it doesn't do a thing!

I rarely use wax. Sealants are usually easier to work with and most of them last longer.
Then there is coatings

I have waxed many cars! including Camaro SS and Pontiac Trans AM but wanting to pay a little more attention to detail on the Corvette! Since this board is full of knowledgeable people(most anyway), I thought there would be some useful suggestions. Seems like you did not have any so I will read on!

As mentioned, the car care section would be the place to hang to learn a variety of different techniques.
