Default Scan Tool Recommendations

I'm looking for a scan tool that will give me the kind of info I'll need before taking my 2013 C6 GS Vert to a repair/maintenance facility. I do the simple maintenance stuff (filters, fluids, etc.), but don't plan on doing much past that.

Ideally, I want to stay under $100, but since this is going to be my wife's Christmas present, I might spring for a few more dollars.

Recommendations appreciated. Thanks.

I bought a cheap one on Amazon I think it was less than $30.00 that can do anything the more expensive units do

it can read and reset all codes ...

I use an ELM 327. There are two versions, a bluetooth and a Wifi. The bluetooth version only works with laptops and android devices while the wifi model works with iphones and ipads. Up to you. Its awesome!

The best one I know of is the Obdlink MX Wifi.

http://www.obdlink.com/mxwf/#symple-tab-compare

Personally I have the bluetooth version, but I think the wifi should have higher update frequency.

The Obdlink software you can get from the app store for free is better than most out there.

I've used it on many cars, and it always worked perfectly. European, American, Japanese. Super easy to use. Just plug it in, open the app on your phone, press connect, and you're ready to scan or log (at least on the bluetooth version, since it stays paired - wifi might take an extra step).

I've wasted my time with many loggers before, including the cheap elm ones, but this is the one to get!

However, if anyone has figured out how to log knock on a Vette, I'd love to know!

I've owned a couple of AutoXray models and like them just fine. I bought the last 2 because I could do data capture and graphing, but I think there are better alternatives out there now, especially if using a laptop. So very interested in the replies here...

I agree on the ELM 327...it provides far more info than a scan tool and shows and resets codes too. The BAFX one on Amazon works great for me...Android only. $25

This is the one I have also. You do need a phone or tablet to use it though. If you already have one then ,if not then a standalone would work too.

These have more then just scan/delete codes. I have the "torque" app on my phone (free) and when connected you get realtime readings on any sensor hooked to the cars computer (No abs or airbag)

It also will tell you if all the monitors are set, if you have annual inspections in your state, it is nice to have as you will know if it will pass or fail an OBDII inpection before you take it in.

Can also Data log any of the sensors ie. watch fuel pressure and record it. Then go for a run and see if you drop fuel pressure at higher rpms, etc.

I have that orange one that 02_NHRA_TA paid $18.00 for, except mine must be twice as good because I paid $38.00 for it at PepBoys eight years ago. It seems to do everything it is supposed to do (read and reset codes).

I don't have personal experience with that one, but if it does everything it says it does, it looks like a really good buy for the bucks!

I personally have an older Actron unit that I paid about $20 for, and it will reset and "live monitor" many of the vette parameters, but nowhere near as many as the I900.

will any of these tell me what the other notifications mean other than check engine. My obd2 bluetouth only reads check engines lights.

What about the service active handling system? How can I find out for myself what part needs fixing?

Default scanner tool.

I just ordered this scanner tool from amazon. It was more than what you'll are talking about but I plan on doing all the work on my 2007 vette and keep it forever. I bought it new and have never had any problems until the check engine light came on recently. I ordered the Actron CP9680 AUTOSCANNER Plus OBD. for $201.00. That is not even 2 hours labor rate here. I've been pulling 3 codes thanks to Advance auto store scan. PO171,174 and PO621. Gen lamp L control circuit. whatever that means? I plan on using this scanner to get more info than a simple scanner tool gives. I hope anyway. more to come after the tool arrives thursday.

I found that cheaper scan tools only check a few items. If you want something that will check more, look into those that will check, OBDII (they all check this), CAN (older versions may not have this capability), ABS (This will check your ABS and Active Handling sensors) and SRS (for your air bag and seat belt system). All that said, I found the Autel AL619 fitted my needs. No affiliation... just trying to help... Here's a link http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...9SIA2VF1HB6659
