I had my #1 key fob stop working several years ago. Got a replacement #1 and all was working fine. Thanksgiving day the #2 fob wouldn't work. Changed the battery still no go. It would start the car even in glove box slot. It would open the door but that was it. Tried to reprogram it in the #4 slot but got known fob. So I bought a replacement #2 programmed it in the #4 slot and now both work. Both fobs picked up the greeting of Hello Judi in the command center for fob 1 and Hello Nick for fob 2. Should I go the long route and clear to get slots 3&4 open again?
When I just did the last one it said max fobs learned. Before I programmed this last fob I tested the slot and both fobs showed as known. Both would open the door but neither would start the car in the glove box slot. Since I programmed the last fob, neither work at all now. My question is should I do the long method and program the new fobs as 1 and 2 leaving 3 and 4 open again? As far as the message goes could it be that it is showing since original fobs 1 and 2 don't work at all?

If you are saying that you don't have any fobs that will start the car then I don't think you have any other option but to do the long method . It takes a while to do .....
But if you have one that is working and starts the car , I would take it to a dealership as I have seen the long method fail which means you would be stuck and have to have the car towed .
When I got my car it was missing a number 2 fob . They gave me a 2nd fob but it was programed as number 3 . Not wanting a lost fob roaming around that could possibly start my car I told the dealership I wanted them to do the long method to erase all fobs except for the 2 that I had in my possession . I could have done it but I did not want to take a chance of erasing all the fobs and then not being able to get them programed
I think that I am rambling. I have two fobs that work fine. They are fobs 3 and 4 in the DIC. The original fobs that came with the car were fobs 1 and 2 in the DIC. Neither of those work.

Ok so you have 2 fobs , 3 and 4, that start the car and you want them to be 1 and 2 , which makes sense if you have seat memory etc , as only 1 and 2 work for the memory
The problem I see is you are going to have to do the long method and erase all the fobs and then program these as 1 and 2
If the reprogramming fails ..... you will not have a fob that will start the car . I have seen reports of the long method failing ... not many but I have seen them .
Ok I did the long programing method and it turned great. Went through the sequence with all four fobs and now they all work. Seat memory works on fobs 1 and 2 like before. Fobs 3 and 4 start the car along with all other button functions. I'm pumped!!! Thanks for the help guys!!!!!
