Default Auto headlight problem

Sometimes when i start my car in the garage and back out into the sun the headlights stay on and will not go off on their own. I don't mind turning them off manually but when i do, the driving lights also go off and the DIC says "Headlights Suggested". The sensor on the dash is not obstructed. Any suggestions?

Doesn't it take a little while for them to go off, not immediately?

Thirty seconds delay is normal, but I have noticed that when it's cold, they can take several minutes to turn off. When it warms up, they go back to thirty seconds delay. Happens every year.

Some days mine go off automatically within 2 or 3 minutes, some days it's longer. But if I rotate the switch on the light stalk and get the "Headlights Suggested" warning, the warning doesn't stay on long and the lights go off.

Yes but mine stayed on for about 15 minutes yesterday until I got to where I was going and shut the car off.

Might be something wrong with your sensor too. The little "R2D2"-looking thing in the center of your dash next to the windshield contains your sensor. I think I've seen a discussion on here where the cover becomes less transparent over time ... kinda cloudy looking ... so the cover could also be the culprit. I would think that would be more likely if you have to keep your car parked out in the sun.

For what it's worth, mine still works fine and my car's a 2009. And it takes roughly the same amount of time to shut off after I back out regardless of the season or temperature.

In the winter months it may take a little longer for them to shut off, even if the sun is out.

I always shut my lights off when starting the car in the garage. When I pull it outside, I wait for the "HEADLIGHTS SUGGESTED" signal to go off. Then I turn them back on and just the DRL's come on, it's time to go. It's never more than 15 - 30 seconds, but then again I live in Florida so the cold doesn't come into play. I can't comment on that part, sorry.

My sensor does look a little cloudy. Can the cover be changed or cleaned

Any cleaner should clean the exterior of the lens. If it does not come clean, you will have to buy a new one.
