Default Man Busted for Using Work Credit Card to Buy Corvette

Using a work-issued American Express card to buy a Corvette? Well, that’s stupidity of a completely different kind.

My experience is that dealers will cap the amount you can put on a credit card as part of a vehicle purchase. They don't want to pay the CC fee. My last purchase I was told the max was $5000.

In 1995 I bought a new T-Bird from a dealer and put the entire amount on my AE card. The salesman called AE and after they approved the transaction he handed me the phone. The rep from AE said "I'm approving this transaction but you do realize the entire balance needs to be paid in full at the end of the month, right?" Yes, no problem.

Perhaps used car dealers will accept a credit card for the full amount of a car, but besides the % dealers pay for card processing, they also can get charged back in the event of a cardholder dispute. I think that is the biggest reason dealers don't want to take cards for more than perhaps a deposit...the potential after sale fraud risk/liability doesn't exist with a wire transfer or certified funds.

Wow.. like the CO is never going to find out. The buyer has to sign lots of paper work for a new car.

That dispute is pretty hard. I'M so glad. I used my card for a from a used Stealer dealer. in TX. Completely Lied about the body condition. and carfax report.
I provided very Concise proof. this horrific body damage work was. never mentioned. Short story they won. until my last interjection. Rightfully reversed & made them take the car back. This would never have happened if I paid with cash on hand!

Yes, you can use it as a negotiating tactic. "If you don't bring the price down, I'm going to pay with a CC and you'll have to pay it anyway." This used to work because the CC contract with the business states that the dealer can't limit the amount charged. I don't know if this changed.

You can also threaten to pay with pennies. Any businesses are required to accept all forms of legal tender.

Default It ranks with.....

...writing the note to the teller on the back of your own deposit slip or trying to cart off an ATM machine chained to your car and ripping off/leaving your rear bumper with your plate on it.....our species never cease to amaze me...............

Probably not in the customer's best interest, as the business certainly can charge you a fee for using the CC -- many places that do this charge anywhere from 2%-5% above the sale price. This practice, while I believe was prohibited in the past, is currently allowed by most CC issuers.

Perhaps, but those same businesses are certainly allowed to NOT complete the sale at all if they choose. I would politely show the customer the door if he starting making threats like that before the deal closed. Not *every* customer is worth keeping.

"But they said I should use the card to cover my car expenses!"
I'd love to get a look at the expense report he turned in to support that purchase.

With that reasoning, you can't finance a car either. If they ever use that line on me i'd walk out saying i'll come back with the exact amount some day!!!
