Default Nav Question

When you buy the new Nav Disk. Does the nav system software need to be updated. Or is it just as simple as putting in the new Nav Disk.

I have a 05 bought from the dealer. Thanks....

I don't believe there is a way to update the firmware on the NAV, so its as simple as putting the new disc in and your done.

There was a firmware update for 05 ONLY but it was only to enable it to play mp3 files and clear up a static problem. For nav disc you can use any version. Just pop it in and go.

I just updated my 08 to the new version. Took the old disc out, put the new one in.

I don't really have anything to add, but my Navi sucks! It's purely there because it's something to look at on the screen, google maps if far superior. My navy has never given me directions, it ALWAYS says "voice guidance not supported" I've given up. Lol

Not to discount the emotional element of the subject, but with nearly 12 years of tech advancement over the factory C6 nav, I would definitely hope so.

My 3 year old cell phone that was top of line in 2013 is practically a dinosaur now. Considering how the nav is 4 times that old, I'd say it's faired rather well

I know that's right. This Nav was developed FOR the 2005 Corvette. So it was in the works years before that. Probably really designed/developed somewhere around 2002. Now think of the computers you had back in 2002 or the cell phones you had back in 2002. Yea...I'd say it's faring EXTREMELY well.

Here's an example of a phone from the 2004-2005 era. The nav looks eerily familiar.

With the apps on the cell phones now I don't normally use the navs in the cars. The cell phone apps are much more superior as they give you real time traffic and guides you around accidents, congested traffic and slow downs. Myself I prefer using the app Waze.

It may be old technology but mine has never failed to get me where I was going.

Default I made teh switch...

For me it was new head unit with Apple Car Play. Now I have itunes, Maps and everything else on my iPhone at my disposal on my in-car screen. Love it. Disk update days are over.

...Plus it sounds so much better.

Even if you don't use the Nav functions, the UI for the radio/XM functions is much better on the Nav radio than the non-nav.

That's good to hear. I have no clue where mine was taking me, but when I was trying to get from TX to IN right after picking the car up...it was taking me about 120miles out of the way. I finally turned it off and used google maps. I am sure it would have gotten me home...but that seemed too far out of the way for my liking. Maybe it was trying to avoid tolls? I dunno.

I do need to get the 2016 update dvd though. That could have been part of the issue.

The system was upgraded in 2011 I think. I like mine once I learned how to use it. It is way more detailed than a phone or even my Garman. It does take some time to learn how to use all the functions and the correct way to program it. Used in conjunction with the Waze app its great.
The video that they use at the Museum to teach the nav use is the best to start learning how to use it IMO.

My guess is that it was something in the settings like "no toll roads" or "no major roads", or something like that. The system has it's idiosyncrasies, just like all systems do, but once you learn it, it works just fine.

Mine has a 2007 disc in it currently, and I've only had one or two instances where it didn't get me where I needed to go. I don't feel the need to pay to upgrade to a newer disc.

My biggest holdout for using a cell phone GPS is safety issues with fumbling around with it while driving.

The Vette doesn't really offer any really good places to put it or prop it up on, and unless I have someone with me in the car to hold it, I will only use it to cross-reference routes and travel times BEFORE I hit the road. Once in awhile it does take me a squirrely, weird route, but generally it's pretty close.

Regardless of all the updates with cell Google maps, I absolutely love the HUD turn-by-turn instructions offered by factory NAV. It's pretty dope.

I know what U mean. I have a 2015 GMC and the Nav. is completely different and easier to use. I have the latest disc also for it.

The development cycle for electronics is much much shorter than that of automobiles. This is the reason that they say that CANBUS is the best network technology standard that 1983 has to offer. The network in the car is thousands of times slower than the wireless network that our grandmothers have in their houses...
