Default catalytic converters

Has anyone had to replace a catalytic Converter with less than 30,000 miles on the odometer.

I have a 2013 Grand Sport.

yes, in my 08 Mustang at similar mileage and age (no mods). Good news is it is still under federal emissions warranty. Drove the Mustang to 70k miles and never had a related issue.

Unless you've done modifications pre-converter, they should be covered for 8 yrs or 80k miles.

So yes, your dealer is not doing what they should.

Thank you for the info. I Googled it as well right now! and it reads the same as you said 8/80. Right on,I will question my service guy. I left the dealer stunned and it just didn't feel right. 27000 miles and no warranty on the cat. converters I have done no mods pretty cat.converter just cat back Corsa exhaust. Once again thanks for taking the time to respond.

Just had the recall done on my '09 and notice there is much less "rich" exhaust smell after a WOT run.

Also had the cats replaced on a 2002 Camaro SS I previously owned under warranty. No mods but one failed and GM swapped both at very low miles (7k) with no issues.

Just wondering if you have a problem with a main converter or 1 of the secondary converters.

What makes you think you have a problem with the cats on a car with that low of mileage?

Default Just lost the left side

Funny you should ask this. I just had a problem with my 05 C6 with only 26,000 miles on it. While on a trip a lot of rattling suddenly started from just behind the engine. I was a few hundred miles from home so went to the closest Chevy Dealer.

They said it was the left side catalytic converter. The internals had come lose and were rattling. No problem to drive it till I got home unless the check engine light came on.

Check engine light came on so I stopped at Auto Zone and they were good enough to diagnose it as "catalyst efficiency low, bank 1". No great surprise. Discovered the catalyst material was disintegrating and blowing out the exhaust. General opinion of a mechanic there and me was that so long as the exhaust was still free flowing I should be OK so I drove on home. Eventually the knocking sound and dust coming out the tailpipe stopped so I figured I was OK to go but needed to replace the catalytic converter.

Decided to take it one step further when I got home so I hitched up my OBD reader and double checked for codes and got just the Oxygen Sensor on bank 1. So I reset it. A mistake, apparently.

Now the car is dead. I can't start it. It Clunks under the hood and the left directional light flashes when you try to start it. Battery is not dead. Several codes have come up on the driver display including Steering column lock, no FOB, traction control malfunction and others at random. The security system doesn't work. Doors won't lock with the FOB. It doesn't help to put the FOB in the FOB holder in the glove compartment.

I'm stuck. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Stew

First I would replace those cats. I like the Magnaflow's. They are better than originals. Check your battery. If you still are getting mulitiple codes afterwards you probably need to find a garage with an Aultel or Snap On diagnositc code reader, perferably both. They can save you a lot of time and grief to properly diagnose your problems.

Thanks for the reply. Turns out, that after a bit more checking, I found that the battery was in fact very low for some reason. Strange that it should just go down for no apparent reason, but after a charge, the car started and the driver display codes went away. That issue is now solved, but a new battery may be in the cards.

Looks like I'll need to pull the entire exhaust system out to replace the catalytic converters since there appears to be no other way to do that job since they're attached to the manifolds. I was also told that some of the substrate material that was blowing out the exhaust is probably also trapped in the system as well and will take some effort to get the rest out, though the system seems not to be blocked at this point.

Thanks for the assist.
