Default Buying C6

Hey guys,

I'm looking to upgrade from my C4 to a C6. I found a silver Z51 M6 with 57k on it for 22,777. Car is in pretty good shape, minor paint scratches. Some normal wear inside, ect. However I have some concerns about the cars history that maybe you guys could help me figure out.

-Car has an open recall for the low beams (no big deal)
-Car has had 6 owners! Some were just a few months
-Fuel sending unit replaced in 05
-2006 "electrical wiring repaired"
-******* 2007****************
Transaxle replaced
Transmission replaced
Differential overhauled
*******************************

That trans/ dif service really have me on edge. Especially with the multiple owners.
Any of you C6 gurus have any wisdom?

The last 3 items would scare me away.
Rode hard and put away wet..??
I'd keep.looking. Find an '08 with just a bit more miles with one or two owners. I found my one owner with 36k miles, 4LT, NPP, MN6 also Z51 for $29k. I flew 1800 miles to buy it and then drove it home. Best times are had by doing that.
They're out there, especially in the off season and if you're willing to travel. Autotrader or Cars.com are your best sources.
Good luck whichever way you go. Fun cars...!!

The rear end replacements are troubling although maybe they were all a result of the same single problem and now they have been replaced- maybe if you could get them to come off a couple of grand but otherwise walk and find another with lower miles and less owners- they are out there just take your time.

You did not mention the year, but I assume it's a 05, which did have issues with the rears, updated in 06. I would keep looking.

Yeah it is an 05. What were the rear ended issues they have?

The differentials in the 05's were weaker so if you track it and get wheel hop they could break. Most 05 owners have never had issues though.

The work from 07 would not bother me since it was so long ago but the 6 owners with two being short term would be a concern.

If you are really considering it, take it in and have it looked over. Tire and HB replacement (which fail in a good portion of C6's) can be expensive.

I am glad to see people on this forum advocating wider areas of searching for the car of your dreams. I would run from this car as fast as I could, simply because I know there are so many more great cars available out there, many with fewer miles, one owner, and same price or less. Why buy a vette that raises a lot of questions when, if you do a good search, you can find many vettes with no issues?

i've owned four vettes and have learned two things for sure.

There are 2 types of owners. one type takes very good of their cars.service, upkeep the whole nine yards.

the other type don't respect the brand or the car and run the dog xhit out of it and don't care......to the point run don't walk away from this car...
there are a whole bunch of nice c6's out there take your time and find a good one. you will thank yourself. these are great cars if taken care of. good luck.....

I'd keep looking ... as other's have said, last three items would make me pass. Could be signs the car was driven extremely hard.

Move on.

A very high percentage of Corvettes are loved and adored. You don't have to settle. Shop harder, you'll be happy you did.

Keep looking. There are so many well looked after C6's out there, some are being polished in a garage at this time, just for you.
It would be worth a few extra $$ to get a pristine low mileage car for sure.
When you think you have found one, get a GMVIS Report run on it based on the Vin #
It will give you the history while it was serviced at any GM dealer, and the options, recall and TSB's performed.
Any GM dealer can run one for you for free, or just check back on this forum. Someone will run one for you.

Good Luck in your search

Number of owners doesn't matter IMO. There are plenty of reasons why people buy and sell cars quickly. The last three items would make me skeptical, but number of owners is NBD.

I looked for quite some time before making the jump. Already had a pristine 95 Coupe with 34,000 miles. Found the color I really wanted, in pampered new condition. A 2008 Z51 3LT, 33,000 miles, A6. Stepped up to $27,000. None of the issues you describe. Keep looking, my friend. Don't settle. It's a lot of money once you move past $20,000...get what you want. By the way, the 2008 hits kind of a performance "sweet spot".

I normally walk away from an 05 but I'd run from this one! 6 owners, trains replaced. There's so many cars out there that are 100 times better. Look for an 08/newer with the LS3.
