Here's the deal. I was sitting in the garage detailing the interior. With the top closed I turned on the acc button and had the stereo on. Sounded like crap...like normal. I then unlatched the top and lifted slightly to clean the weatherstrip. The sound cut off for a second, then back on, and wow.....it sounded 100x better with the top slightly up. Ok.... So I closed the latch, sound cut off, then back on again, and crappy sound. Unlatched the top again, lifted slightly, it cut off, back on, and great sound. Closed it again....crappy sound.
Very strange. Does it do the same with the car running?
Now that I think about it its probably the sound leveling function causing it. It automatically plays louder when the top is down. You can turn that off in the menu somewhere.

I haven't tried it with the car running, just acc mode. I'll go check that now. I don't have the sound leveling turned on. That was one of the first thing I thought for sure would be causing this.
I've got a 2005 vert with Bose/nav so a different unit than yours, but I wonder if it has something to do with an automatic volume function, or Bose AudioPilot nose compensation? It would't surprise me if there is circuitry that's triggered when opening the top.
This is described in my owner's manual so you might check the sound system section of the manual for your model.
Same thing if the car is on. Really odd. Can someone else check this on their car? I really wish I had that sound quality when the top is up. Again, sound leveling or auto pilot is off. So this one has me stumped....
There is a switch in the top of the driver's side A-pillar that the car uses to determine if the top is up and secure, or not.
It also toggles the radio between two different tone control settings while briefly muting during the switch-over.
You can activate this change by using a small screw driver to poke down into the hole at the top of the A-pillar and activate the switch. I know because I tried this.
A little unsettling but nothing to worry about.
